5 Big Threes That Are Better Than LeBron James, Dwyane Wade & Chris Bosh

Bryant T. JordanJun 15, 2012

LeBron, Wade, Bosh. Three names that struck fear into the hearts of NBA players, general managers and fans everywhere outside South Beach. Ever since "The Decision" when LeBron James joined Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to form the Miami Heat's "Big Three", the trio has been considered a near-lock to win multiple titles.

However, after two years together without a single title, is the trio truly the most dominant Big Three in NBA history who should be known as a "trinity" that leads the Heatles? Or, should the trio be known as little more than the under-achieving "Three My Egos"?

In the following slides, I will list five current "Big Three's" that are simply better than the Heat's trio:

Oklahoma City Thunder: Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden

1 of 5

Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden may not quite have the same name status as the Heat's Big Three, primarily because Harden is still flying under the radar, Westbrook is becoming more known for his outlandish attire than his outstanding play and well, all three of them play in Oklahoma and not in a major media market.

However, the Thunder's trio has a better future than the Heat's trio, period.

Sure the Heat trio may beat the Thunder trio in a game of 3-on-3 due in large part to Bosh's size and post-play, and yes the Heat trio has experienced more success than that of the Thunder's to-date as they have won two conference championships. However, it is the Thunder's Big Three that seems destined to be the cornerstone of a true NBA dynasty.

OKC's Big Three even averaged more combined points and assists per game, despite playing slightly less combined floor time each game.

While Miami's Big Three has a combined age of 85, OKC's has a combined age of just 68! Throw in the fact that star power forward and human fly-swatter Serge "Air Congo" Ibaka is just 22 years of age as well and could literally turn OKC's Big Three into a Big Four very soon, and one can see why the NBA may belong to the Thunder for the foreseeable future.

Los Angeles Lakers: Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol

2 of 5

In the past five seasons the Lakers Big Three of Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol have won three conference championships and two NBA titles.

The only way the Heat's Big Three could surpass such excellence over their first five years together is if they win three of the next four NBA titles, starting this season against the favored Thunder. In all likelihood such will not happen and the Heat's Big Three will fail to accomplish as much as Kobe, Drew and Pau did in their first five years together, period.

Many will say that while the Lakers Big Three may have certainly accomplished more to date, the fact is that the Heat's Big Three is currently superior to the ageless Black Mamba, young Andrew the Giant and old man Pau. However, I disagree...strongly.

I believe the Lakers were the second-best team in this year's playoffs when they were eliminated, that they would have beaten the Spurs had they escaped the Thunder and that they certainly would have trounced the Heat team that was playing against Boston (with a missing and later ailing Bosh).

The Lakers may not have beaten the Heat team we are all watching in this year's NBA Finals, with a healthy Bosh, but that would not be due to the play of each team's Big Three, merely the horrid play of the Lakers bench which is one of the worst in the league.

If the NBA playoffs were a mere 5-on-5 with no benches allowed game, the Lakers would easily win the title, thanks in large part to their dominating Big Three. However benches are allowed and the Lakers did not have a chance, period.

Boston Celtics: Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce

3 of 5

Miami's and Boston's Big Three have each won two conference championships. However, only the Celtics's Big Three has won an NBA title.

Until Miami's Big Three wins their first NBA title they simply do not deserve to be called a "better" Big Three than that of the Celtics trio. In fact, Miami will need to win two titles or at least a third conference championship to go along with one NBA title to be considered "better" than the dynamic Celtics trio of Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

What makes Boston's trio not only better than the Heat's trio is that Celtics trio fits perfectly together. One ball handler and distributor in Rondo, one wing scorer in Pierce and one multi-talented big man in Garnett. Boston's Big Three simply does not have the problems that Miami's has with two of their players having nearly identical skill sets.

Dwyane Wade is simply a smaller, poor-man's LeBron James, period. This is the primary reason I personally advocated the Heat trading Wade at the March trade deadline for a package of players such as star point guard Deron Williams, young talented center Brook Lopez and three-point marksman, shooting guard Anthony Morrow.

Neither Wade or James is even an above-average three-point shooter, neither could be considered a center in any sense of the word, and while James is a solid ball-handler and magnificent passer, he is not a true point guard by any stretch of the imagination.

Any NBA general manager who has the desire to form his own Big Three should use the Celtics trio as his blueprint, period.

San Antonio Spurs: Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili

4 of 5

Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and Manu Ginobili have combined for three conference championships and three NBA titles. LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh have combined for two conference championships and no NBA titles. Honestly one could follow such a sentence with a simple, "enough said".

The Lakers Big Three of Kobe Bryant, Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol may have accomplished the most in the least amount of time with three conference championships and two NBA titles in just five season together. The Celtics Big Three may be the perfect blueprint by which all future Big Three should be constructed. The Thunder Big Three may soon rule the NBA with an iron fist. However, it is the Spurs' Big Three that has undoubtedly accomplished the most!

It has been nearly a decade since Parker, Duncan and Ginobili played their first game together in the 2002-03 season. They won their first title together in that very same first season and nearly won a fourth title as teammates this past season! There is something to be said for sustained excellence, consistency and longevity and the Spurs' Big Three is the gold standard in all three categories.

Chicago Bulls: Derrick Rose, Luol Deng and Joakim Noah

5 of 5

Derrick Rose, Luol Deng and Joakim Noah have lead the Bulls to the best record in the East Conference, and therefore a better record than the Miami Heat the past two seasons.

Last season the Bulls destroyed the Heat in their regular season series and then were destroyed by the Heat in their Conference Finals series. This season the Bulls were favored by many to win the East as well as the NBA title, until Derrick Rose went down with a season-ending injury.

Yes, I know that Rose did not deserve to win the MVP Award last season and that LeBron James should have won his fourth-straight rather than his third MVP trophy this season. Yes, I know that the Bulls blew their home court advantage in losing to the Heat last year. And, yes, I know that Rose is in for a long and painful recovery process before he can return to form as a superstar point guard.

However, the fact is that the Bulls' Big Three is built according to the Celtics blueprint with a great ball handling and penetrating point guard, wing scorer and dynamic defensive-minded big man. Chicago's Big Three is also younger than Miami's trio, by a combined eight years. As such, it would not shock me to see the Bulls Big Three finish with more career conference titles and more importantly NBA rings than Miami's trio of superstars.
