Big Ten Football Weekly Recruiting Roundup: Northwestern Nabs 4
Every week here at The Big Ten Blog, we will update you on the latest commits, decommits and rumors in the recruiting world.
Commits
Nebraska continued to build its strong 2013 class by welcoming Akron, Ohio wideout Kevin Gladney to the fold, per ESPN.com. Gladney chose Nebraska over Iowa, and he's the Huskers' fourth commit from Ohio. Highlights? Yessir, he's got highlights.
Indiana finally got on the board, securing a commitment from wide receiver Isaac Griffith, per The News-Sentinel. Griffith has decent size at 6'0" and 185 pounds, and had offers from several MAC schools before jumping on his first BCS conference offer. He's already working to recruit other players to Indiana, so if the class isn't very good, it's totally his fault.
But it was Northwestern that was the belle of the ball this week—so to speak—with four commitments all jumping on board, bringing the Wildcat class up to... well, six. Northwestern does things at its own pace, guys.
The biggest commit this week for Northwestern—both literally the biggest and the most high-profile—was Sam Coverdale, a 6'7", 280-pound tackle prospect who had some ACC-level offers and has an academic profile high enough to get attention from the Ivy League schools too. In other words: Northwestern material all the way.
Northwestern also added offensive linemen Brad North and Tyler Lancaster to the fold, but the steal of this recruiting class might be wideout Macan Wilson, who according to Scout.com committed last Friday. Wilson is 6'1" and 185 pounds and made 91 catches as a junior in Houston. He's planning on being used in the slot like Jeremy Ebert, and figures to be the type of player that gets underestimated until he goes off for 10 catches and 105 yards while opposing fans scream, "Good lord, why can't anybody stop him?!" This is also known as a Taylor Stubblefield.
Decommits
No news on this front this week. Who decommits in June, anyway? It's too hot to go through all that drama.
News & Rumors
Tom Tolley of Victory Bell Rings says Penn State is in on several linebacker targets, including Brandon Bell and Zach Bradshaw, who both visited recently. Tolley also thinks LB Buddy Brown is only an offer away from committing; he'll be at camp at Penn State this weekend.
ESPN.com's RecruitingNation (please just use a space in that name, guys) section culled recruiting expense data for all the schools that are required to report it. Michigan was tops in the Big Ten and eighth overall in the nation, but by and large the Big Ten doesn't spend a ton of money here. Illinois also went hard with $545,000 in expenses, but the Illini and Wolverines were the only two programs to top a half-million. Make of that what you will.
MGoBlog notes that Logan Tuley-Tillman announced on Twitter that he had controversial news, only to later state that he had lost 15 pounds and wanted to tryout at tight end. Tuley-Tillman also said, and we quote, "lol #goblue." This is your weekly reminder that following athletes on Twitter is not only creepy, but counter-productive to boot.
