Ricky Seals-Jones Decommits from Texas Longhorns: So What Happens Now?

Edwin WeathersbyJun 4, 2018

The nation's No. 1 WR (according to Rivals), Ricky Seals-Jones, gave Texas a verbal commitment way back in February. Hailing from the Lone Star State, we chalked this up to the Texas rule whereby if you're a stud recruit from Texas, you end up at Texas.

Well, that rule is currently being challenged because Seals-Jones has announced he has decommitted from Mack Brown and the Longhorns. Come on inside, and let's sort things out and see what happens from here.

Hook 'em Horns? Maybe not in this case.

Who Is Ricky Seals-Jones?

Again, Seals-Jones is viewed by many as the nation's No. 1 WR prospect for the class of 2013. He is from Sealy, TX and is one of the elite offensive playmakers in the nation.

Standing at 6'5" and nearly 220 pounds, Seals-Jones is an outstanding athlete. His large frame has called many to even project him as a TE in college.

He currently plays mostly QB and FS in high school, but with his length, athleticism, speed and solid playing instincts, he will be a collegiate pass-catcher in all likelihood.

When he committed to Texas, Seals-Jones' pledge was huge, as he held (and holds) offers from just about every major program in the country.

Why the Decommitment?

When you're 6'5", 220 pounds and dripping with Seals-Jones' size and athleticism, you're not going to limit yourself to just one sport in high school.

Seals-Jones is also a very good basketball player and could be a solid small forward in college. Last year, as a junior, he averaged 32 points, 15 rebounds and nearly 2.5 blocks per game on the hardwood.

According to Horns Nation/ESPN, Seals-Jones wants to play hoops in college, and it doesn't sound as if Texas is too hot on the idea.

The report, meanwhile, also states that LSU and Baylor appear to respect the idea, which is plenty attractive to Seals-Jones.

Scout.com also names Texas A&M as a player in his recruitment.

So What Now?

Tyrone Swoopes, the 5-star Texas QB commit and closest ally to Seals-Jones in the current Longhorn recruiting class, told Horns Nation/ESPN that he has spoken with Seals-Jones and believes Texas is the top school for the star prospect.

"

The Longhorns are still a legit candidate for his services and he does not want to lose the school as an option, but he wants to make sure he made the right choice and has the opportunity to look in to everything.

"Texas is still high on the list. I just wanted to look around and make sure that Texas is the right place for me and not take anything for granted."

"

Versatile OL prospect and Texas commit Jake Raulerson also echoes that notion, as Raulerson stated that Seals-Jones informed him that Texas is still his prime choice.

However, look for Seals-Jones to take a trip to Baton Rouge and Waco to respectively check out LSU and Baylor.

Also, I'd imagine that since this involves basketball, Seals-Jones' recruitment might last awhile, since it would be wise for him to make an official visit to LSU and Baylor during basketball season.
