Cal FC Look to Continue Miraculous Run in U.S. Open Cup

Joe TanseyJun 7, 2018

Cal FC are in the middle of producing one of the biggest upsets in American soccer history and no one is paying attention to them outside of the American soccer media.

The club is based in Thousand Oaks, California and was only created a few years ago, but they are somehow making waves in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Cal FC is coached by former American international and current Fox Soccer analyst Eric Wynalda. The team have made their way into the fourth round of the American version of the FA Cup.

The California club play in the lower levels of American soccer, the United States Adult Soccer Association (USADA), to be specific.

After qualifying for the U.S. Open Cup this season, Cal FC have gone on a miraculous run through the competition.

In the first round, Cal FC beat Kitsap Pumas, a club in the USL Premier Development League, 3-1.

The next victim for Wynalda's club was the Wilmington Hammerheads, part of third-tier USL Professional Division.

Then, the biggest upset of them all came in the third round over MLS club Portland Timbers.

Next up for the underdogs are the Seattle Sounders of MLS, who have won the competition for the past three seasons.

This amazing month-long run has captured the American soccer pulse with story lines that you could not even make up.

First, head coach Wynalda was absent for the first game because of his coverage of the UEFA Champions League final in Munich, Germany for Fox Soccer.

Then, against all odds in Portland, the Timbers outshot the club 37 to eight last Tuesday, but they somehow managed to hold on. After a goal by Artur Aghasayan in extra time, they advanced into the round of 16.

Up next for Cal FC is Tuesday's visit to CenturyLink Field to face the Sounders.

The lead-up to the game has grown every day in the past week with two main story lines.

The first is the obvious one with the Sounders, being the dominant club in the competition for the past three seasons, going up against the upstart underdogs at their home fortress in Seattle.

The other is more intriguing: Wynalda was discovered back in the 1990s by Seattle coach Sigi Schmid, who recommended him to the national team program. The rest was history as Wynalda earned 107 caps and a spot in the National Soccer Hall of Fame.

There is no doubt that Cal FC have defied the odds already, but with a win over the Seattle Sounders on Tuesday night, the story of the underdogs will only grow bigger ahead of the quarterfinals.
