Heat vs. Celtics: All Eyes on Rajon Rondo in Game 3 of Eastern Conference Finals

Alex KayJun 1, 2012

The Miami Heat may be running away from the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference Finals, but that won’t stop almost every NBA fan tuning in to see what Rajon Rondo has up his sleeve tonight.

After his incredible Game 2 performance—Rondo slapped together a 44-point, 10-assist, eight-rebound, three-steal performance in 53 minutes played while shooting 66.7 percent from the field and nailing both of his three-point attempts—everyone cannot wait to see what he will do next.

The eccentric point guard is turning into the future leader of the C’s before our eyes. He’s playing out of his mind and is the only one on the roster who is capable of hanging with Dwyane Wade and LeBron James.

With the Big Three era likely coming to a close once Boston's season ends—Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett are both unrestricted free agents—the Celts have to embrace the oddities of Rondo and build around him to remain competitive.

Paul Pierce will be the last vestige of the championship team assembled in 2008, and he has just two seasons left on his deal after this year. With all of its potential cap room, Beantown has to get younger and more athletic.

There is no better PG suited to running the break than Rondo, but the personnel on the current team hamstring his abilities.

He’s been able to find ways to overcome that—namely by crashing the boards and becoming the best setup artist in the league—but Rondo would flourish with healthy, young athletes surrounding him.

With the ECF all but decided, it’s still going to be worthwhile to watch and see what exactly Rajon has in store. He seems to only get better as the pressure mounts.

While he might not be able to single-handedly beat the Heat tonight, Rajon Rondo will give Celtics fans a lot of hope for the future.
