The 10 Most Bizarre Traditions in College Football
College football is a sport that stands alone to a lot of fans. Throughout its history, teams have developed traditions that have carried on through today and are held close to some college fans' hearts.
On the other hand, some traditions that have started are just flat out strange and bizarre. The interesting part about college football is that despite how bizarre these traditions may be, they continue and are still popular with their fan bases.
Here is a look at 10 truly bizarre traditions around the nation, and while we review them, think to yourself, what is my school's bizarre tradition?
Dotting the 'I'
1 of 10It is extremely interesting how much attention the Ohio State band has gotten for dotting the "I" in Ohio, but it is one of the things it is known most for. White it may be simple, the final touch being put on the Ohio script lettering is something that the Buckeye fan base looks for every home game.
Les Miles Enjoying Some Grass
2 of 10You want bizarre, talk to Les Miles. A few years ago, Miles was caught on camera enjoying some grass straight from the field. After this was caught, the story picked up steam and Miles explained himself.
In a postgame interview, Miles said, "I've always seemed to enjoy a blade or two now and then, not that this was a meal in any way but more of kind of being in touch with where I was at."
The Stanford Band
3 of 10One way to accurately describe the Stanford band is by calling them bizarre. While talented and entertaining, the band is way out in left field and seems to be getting stranger by the year.
Uniform Changes for Oregon
4 of 10One thing that people around the nation still have a hard time getting their arms around is the constant change to the Oregon uniforms. While teams like Michigan and Alabama enjoy the tradition behind their uniforms, Oregon has embraced change and has made the constant rotation one of its traditions.
Hawaii Warriors Ceremonial Dances
5 of 10While the cultural dances that the Hawaii Warriors players perform are extremely meaningful to their culture, it can come across as bizarre to some novice college football fans. If you give it time, the dances are full of emotion and can be extremely entertaining.
Jump Around
6 of 10When you go to a game at Wisconsin, make sure that if you are leaving your seat, you do it before the end of the third quarter. Between the end of the third and start of the fourth, the student section and many fans join in with the song "Jump Around" and do just that—jump around.
Trophy Games
7 of 10One thing that makes college football stand out from other sports is all of the traditions and trophy games that are played around the nation. While some of these games have cool trophies, others are not so lucky. In some games, teams are doing battle for a bronzed boot, an Illibuck (wooden turtle), an old oak bucket and more.
Toomer's Tree
8 of 10A tradition that started back in the '50s at Auburn was that when the team would win a road game, fans would head to Toomer's Tree and throw toilet paper all over it. This tradition has continued to today and has actually grown to fans doing it after all wins.
While it is another unique college football tradition, it is definitely bizarre.
Running Ralphie
9 of 10Whoever thought it was a great idea to run a massive animal like a buffalo onto the field was off their rocker. Ralphie runs on to the home field for Colorado during fall Saturdays, and while the home crowd loves the tradition, it is strangely unique.
Stanford Tree
10 of 10Stanford finds its way onto the list once again, and this time it is with its mascot. The Stanford Tree is a unique mascot, to say the least. The tree is a truly strange mascot that seems to stumble around all over the place and is just another strangely unique part of the Stanford program.
