Stanford Football Creates Andrew Luck Directorship of Offense to Honor QB

Timothy RappMay 22, 2012

There will be no more offensive coordinators at Stanford. Instead, the position will now be called the Andrew Luck Director of Offense.

Seriously.

We get the news from a press release at GoStanford.com:

"

Stanford Athletics announced today that its offensive coordinator position has been endowed by a very generous gift from an anonymous donor in honor of graduating senior quarterback Andrew Luck.

"It is a tremendous honor to hold this position and to be associated with an outstanding young man like Andrew Luck, who means so much to Stanford football and the Stanford community," said Stanford's first Andrew Luck Director of Offense, Pep Hamilton.

"

How's that for a legacy? You don't just go down in Stanford's history as one of the two best quarterbacks in the school's history (I see you, John Elway), you also get a coaching position named after you.

That's pretty sweet.

If ever there was a college quarterback worthy of the honor, Luck is it. He finished his career at Stanford with 9430 passing yards (second in school history), 82 touchdowns (first in school history) a 31-7 record under center and was a two-time Heisman Trophy runner-up.

More importantly, he helped turn around a Stanford program that had floundered for years, helping to put the Cardinal back on the national scene as a one of the country's best programs over the past two seasons.

Luck will join a long line of endowed positions at the school, as John Taylor of College Football Talk noted:

"

The endowment continues a long tradition at the school, from the head football coach—Bradford M. Freeman Director of Football David Shaw—to the athletic director—Jaquish & Kenninger Director of Athletics Bob Bowlsby, prior to his being named the Big 12′s commissioner—to coaches in other sports as well.

"

But we still haven't asked the most pertinent question: Who is this mysterious yet generous anonymous donor?

Was it just a Luck enthusiast who wanted his legacy to live on? Or perhaps Jim Irsay, who wrote the donation into Luck's contract  after drafting him to be the Indianapolis Colts' franchise quarterback?

Or maybe it was Luck's parents, because they are oh so proud of their little Andrew.

It's a mystery that will likely go unsolved. And an honor for Mr. Luck that will likely live on forever.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets will gladly have another as well.
