Kenny Dalglish: How Dismissal of Manager Will Affect Liverpool's Transfer Window

Jessica MarieMay 16, 2012

Now that they've bid farewell to their manager and are beginning the a quest for a new one, it might be difficult for Liverpool to focus on transfers for the next couple of months.

A press release on Liverpool's website revealed that the legendary manager Kenny Dalglish was relieved of his managing duties on Wednesday after having his contract terminated. The release insists that the decision wasn't "reached lightly or hastily," but "a change was appropriate"—most likely due to Liverpool's disappointing run this season.

As a player with Liverpool, Dalglish earned six English league titles and three European Cup trophies, but as a manager, his 2011-12 season was mired in controversy and failure. The club finished in eighth place with a 14-10-14 record.

In part of a statement, Liverpool chairman Tom Werner said:

"

He did more than anyone else to stabilize Liverpool over the past year-and-a-half and to get us once again looking forward. We owe him a great debt of gratitude. However, results in the Premier League have been disappointing and we believe to build on the progress that has already been made, we need to make a change. We are committed to delivering success for our supporters and our ambition remains resolute to return this great Club to the elite of England and Europe, where it belongs.

"

Now is probably the best time to cut ties with the manager, before the transfer window really begins to heat up. But no matter when Liverpool chose to go in a different direction, they are one step behind the rest of the pack. Getting a player to sign amidst so much instability is a tall task.

After his dismissal, Dalglish said as part of a statement on the Liverpool website:

"

[I] feel proud that we delivered the Club's first trophy in six years winning the Carling Cup and came close to a second trophy in the FA Cup Final. Of course I am disappointed with results in the league, but I would not have swapped the Carling Cup win for anything as I know how much it meant to our fans and the Club to be back winning trophies.

"

This isn't Werner's and principal owner John Henry's first foray into seeking other options as far as managers. The pair also own the Boston Red Sox along with Larry Lucchino, and they recently fired manager Terry Francona following a disastrous 2011 campaign.

Judging by the hire they made to replace Francona, Liverpool fans might be wary.

This is an ownership group that has proven it's not afraid to pull the plug when things are going in the wrong direction—but it's also an ownership group that has been unable to prove conclusively that it can right the ship. More important than revamping the roster during the transfer window is going to be finding a manager who can restore Liverpool to greatness.

The question isn't whether or not the right manager is out there. The question is whether the people holding the keys are capable of finding that person.
