Final English Premier League Power Rankings
What a Sunday the final day of the Premier League turned out to be.
Manchester City clinched the title in the final minute of their game against QPR with a Sergio Aguero goal in a game that provided all the elements of a classic match.
Although they lost, QPR stayed up as Bolton drew with Stoke sending Bolton down to the Championship with the already relegated Blackburn and Wolves.
In the race for Champions League spots, Arsenal earned third place with a win over West Brom while Tottenham won to finish fourth and they need Chelsea to lose in the Champions League final to earn their spot in Europe's top club competition.
In another small headline, Everton finished above Liverpool in the table earning the Toffees bragging rights over their rivals and marking the final blow to Liverpool's disappointing 2011-12 campaign.
As always, last week's ranking is in parenthesis.
20. Wolverhampton (20)
1 of 20Wolves opened and closed the scoring in their match with Wigan but could not come away with a point as they lost 3-2 on the road to close out their time in the Premier League.
Matt Jarvis and Steven Fletcher, two players who may leave the club in the summer, scored a goal each for Wolves in the defeat.
Wolves have taken no time finding the man who will look to bring them back to the Premier League as they hired former Cologne boss Stale Solbakken to manage the club and replace Terry Connor.
19. Blackburn (19)
2 of 20After being relegated on Monday, Blackburn did not earn a final point in the Premier League as they fell to Chelsea, 2-1, at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.
Yakubu scored a consolation goal in the 60th minute to put his season total up to 16.
It will be interesting to see what Rovers do during the summer to improve their squad to try and make it back to the Premier League and whether Steve Kean will return as manager will be a key question to ask of Blackburn's ownership as well.
18. Bolton (17)
3 of 20Bolton's second consecutive 2-2 draw was not enough to keep the club in the Premier League for another season.
The Trotters drew at Stoke in a game that was a tale of two halves.
After goals from Mark Davies and Kevin Davies in the first half and with QPR losing, things looked positive but the Trotters gave up a 77th minute penalty and ended up with a result that was not good enough.
Relegation to the Championship will give the club new challenges to face and whether manager Owen Coyle is around for that, management will have to decide on that before the new season starts.
17. Aston Villa (18)
4 of 20Aston Villa ended their disappointing season on Sunday with a 2-0 loss to Norwich.
Blame whoever you want for the collapse at Villa Park this year but manager Alex McLeish will most likely pay the price and lose his job.
After finishing ninth last season, the Villains ended in 16th place this season and have been set back a year in progression by McLeish, who almost took both Birmingham clubs down to the Championship in consecutive years.
16. Queens Park Rangers (14)
5 of 20QPR secured survival on Sunday in one of the best games in Premier League history in a 3-2 loss to Manchester City.
Djibril Cisse equalized for the R's in the 48th minute and then all hell broke loose.
Joey Barton was sent off for elbowing Carlos Tevez and kicking Sergio Aguero in the 55th minute.
After some spectacular saves from Paddy Kenny, Jamie Mackie scored on a header on a counter attack in the 66th minute before City began their memorable comeback.
The main question now for QPR is how long Barton's suspension will be after his antics cost his club the game on Sunday.
15. Norwich City (16)
6 of 20Norwich ended their season with a 2-0 home win in front of their fans at Carrow Road.
Grant Holt and Simeon Jackson scored a goal each in the first half to clinch the win for the Canaries.
Holt's ninth minute strike was his 15th goal of the season and some people are saying 31-year-old should have a shot at making the England squad for Euro 2012 with Wayne Rooney and Darren Bent out.
As for the club, a 12th place finish is a very positive first season in the Premier League and now they need to find a way to improve on that and not fall back into the Championship after two years.
14. Wigan (15)
7 of 20Wigan's wonderful end of the season form continued Sunday as they beat Wolves, 3-2, at home.
Franco di Santo scored the opener in 12th minute before Emmerson Boyce fired home a double to secure victory.
The Latics ended the season winning seven of their last nine games, which included victories over Arsenal, Manchester United and Newcastle.
Although there is minor speculation Roberto Martinez may leave the club to manage elsewhere, he needs to first prove that he can get a team to perform for a whole season, not just the final two months like Wigan have done the past two seasons.
13. Sunderland (12)
8 of 20The Stadium of Light was a scene of utter jubilation and disgust in a matter of minutes, but it was not Sunderland feeling those emotions.
Their opponents on Sunday were Manchester United, who lost the title in the last minute of the season.
In the game played at Sunderland, United defeated the hosts 1-0.
The loss extended the Black Cats' winless streak to eight, the club has not won a game since March 24th.
In the summer, manager Martin O'Neill has to go after a goal scorer as that was one of the things that the club lacked all season long.
12. Stoke City (13)
9 of 20Stoke stumbled into the end of the season as they drew 2-2 with Bolton on Sunday.
Jonathan Walters scored the two goals for the Potters, including a 77th minute penalty that sent Bolton down to the Championship.
The Potters finished 14th and their fatigue from all of their Europa League play eventually caught up to them as they only won one game in their final 11 games.
11. West Brom (11)
10 of 20Roy Hodgson's final game in charge of West Brom ended in a 3-2 loss to Arsenal that was full of fireworks.
Three goals were fired home in the first 15 minutes of the game including goals from Shane Long and Graham Dorrans for the Baggies.
However, Martin Fulop had a nightmare day in goal and gave a few easy goals to the visitors, resulting in a loss in Hodgson's final game before leaving for the England job.
The first thing that the Baggies ownership must do this summer is find a new manager and the favorites, according to the bookmakers, for the job include Chris Hughton, Gus Poyet and Alan Curbishley.
10. Fulham (9)
11 of 20Fulham's final game of the season resulted in a 2-0 loss to London rivals, Tottenham.
The club had a fair share of chances but they could not get one past Spurs' Brad Friedel.
The main goal now for the Cottagers is to somehow hold on to Clint Dempsey, who had a career season with 17 Premier League goals and will surely be sought after by some of the bigger clubs this summer.
9. Swansea City (10)
12 of 20Not much happened at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday until Danny Graham scored in the 86th minute to give Swansea their 12th win of the season.
The 1-0 win came over Liverpool, who only finished three places ahead of the Swans in the final league table.
As for Brendan Rodgers and company, they finished in 11th, the highest of three promoted clubs, with 47 points.
8. Liverpool (7)
13 of 20Liverpool ended their underachieving season with a 1-0 loss on the road at Swansea.
Only five days before, the Reds scored four goals in a home win over Chelsea but they could not muster a goal in Wales on Sunday.
Although they did win the Carling Cup and will be playing in the Europa League next season, that is just small consolation gift to take from the season.
One of the more depressing parts about finishing in eighth place is that the Reds finished one place behind Merseyside rivals,Everton.
7. Newcastle United (6)
14 of 20Newcastle lost 3-1 to Everton on Sunday and could produce a goal themselves as a Tony Hibbert own goal put them on the scoreboard.
Newcastle were the surprise team of the season as they finished in fifth place thanks to scoring displays from their Senegal duo Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse.
However, the Magpies did fade towards the end of the season with three losses in their final four games, a run of form that cost them a spot in the Champions League next season.
6. Tottenham (8)
15 of 20Tottenham secured fourth place in the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Fulham on Sunday.
Emmanuel Adebayor scored club-leading 17th goal of the season while Jermain Defoe netted his 11th of the campaign in the second half.
Now Spurs will have to wait and see what Chelsea do in the Champions League final to determine their fate in Europe's top club competition for next season.
If Chelsea lose to Bayern Munich, then Spurs will enter the Champions League but if Chelsea win, the North London club will enter the Europa League instead.
5. Everton (4)
16 of 20Everton put on a fine performance at home to beat Newcastle, 3-1, on Sunday.
Steven Pienaar, Nikica Jelavic and John Heitinga scored goals for the Toffees.
Jelavic has proven to be one of the top signings of the season he has scored nine goals since coming over from Rangers in January.
Another thing to proud of if you are an Everton fan is that the Toffees finished in seventh place, one spot ahead of Merseyside rivals, Liverpool.
4. Chelsea (2)
17 of 20Chelsea finished off their league campaign with a 2-1 win over Blackburn at Stamford Bridge.
John Terry and Raul Meireles, two players who will not take part in the Champions League final, scored goals three minutes apart in the first half for the Blues.
Now, all the focus will be on Munich and the Champions League final on Saturday, a game in which the Blues need to win in order to play in the competition next season.
3. Arsenal (5)
18 of 20Arsenal earned third place in the Premier League on Sunday with a win over West Brom, 3-2.
The Gunners were the beneficiaries of some poor goalkeeping by Martin Fulop in their victory.
Yossi Benayoun opened the scoring in the fourth minute while Andre Santos and Laurent Koscielny, two unlikely names on the score sheet, put home the other two goals.
With the clinching of third place, the Gunners earned a berth in next season's Champions League and do not have to wait until Saturday to find out their fate like their North London rivals, Tottenham, have to do.
2. Manchester United (3)
19 of 20Manchester United thought they had done enough to win the title but that changed in a matter of minutes on Sunday.
Just minutes after their 1-0 win over Sunderland, United players and fans went from celebrating to being in a state of utter disbelief as Manchester City came back and won their match with QPR.
In the game itself, Wayne Rooney scored his 27th goal of the season to give United the win but that was just an after thought when the game concluded.
United did finish second and will play in the Champions League yet again next season in their quest to reclaim the title.
1. Manchester City (1)
20 of 20May 13, 2012 will go down in history for Manchester City as the day they stole the title away from their rivals Manchester United in the most dramatic fashion.
After being goal down for most of the second half, Edin Dzeko scored an equalizer at the beginning of stoppage time, and the rest is history.
Sergio Aguero scored with virtually the last kick of the game and sent the Etihad Stadium into celebration of City's first league title since 1968.
The video of the goal and Martin Tyler's call says everything about how incredible the comeback was.
