Most Boneheaded Locker Room Moments in NBA History

Peter EmerickJun 5, 2018

From losing fights with fire extinguishers to teammates pulling guns on each other, NBA locker rooms are never devoid of exciting and sometimes boneheaded moments.

Thanks to Amar'e Stoudemire and his incident with the infamous fire extinguisher, the bar on boneheaded moments has been raised to a whole new level.

Boneheaded moments will always be a part of professional sports, specifically the NBA, and it's time to honor those moments.

Ahead is a list of the most boneheaded locker room moments in NBA history.

Shannon Brown Moons the Entire World

1 of 8

Little did this NBA reporter know that as he was interviewing Derek Fisher his cameraman was exposing Shannon Brown's tooth to the entire world.

This doesn't necessarily fall into the boneheaded moment in terms of the NBA players themselves. The boneheaded moment this time is all on the shoulders of this unfocused cameraman.

This video featuring Shannon Brown and his butt is a perfect example of why reporters and cameramen don't go into NBA locker rooms all that often.

Thank you cameraman for giving us all a quick glimpse of what a professional basketball player's butt looks like. I've always wondered (not really).

Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton Pulling Pistols on Each Other

2 of 8

I'm always amazed at what happens inside NBA locker rooms, but this confrontation takes "boneheaded moments" to a whole different level.

Apparently, Arenas owed Crittenton some money related to a gambling debt. And apparently Arenas took offense to Crittenton wanting his money back and yelled "I'm not your punk," then proceeded to pull a gun on his teammate.

Unfortunately for Arenas, Crittenton, for some reason, had a gun with him, too, and the two then engaged in a heated standoff. Arenas and Crittenton's troubles didn't end in the locker room, as they were both charged with concealment of a deadly weapon, and they both received sentences ranging from probation for Crittenton to 30 days in a halfway house for Arenas.

The worst part of this situation is that it certainly signaled the end to Arena's somewhat productive career, and Crittenton went on to be charged with murder this past summer. While most bonehead locker room moments are comical and nonsensical, this one actually had a seriously negative effect on both players.

Miami Heat Crying After Starting the 2010-11 Season 7-8

3 of 8

After a loss to the Chicago Bulls last season, head coach Erik Spoelstra let it be known in a press-conference that some of the players were in the locker room crying over the loss.

This bonehead moment isn't necessarily surrounding the actual crying, but instead surrounding the fact that Spoelstra thought it was necessary to tell the media, who was already hyped around tearing apart the Heatles every chance they got.

As the head coach of an NBA team, you're supposed to protect your players and ensure that you're doing everything you possibly can to help them stick together as a team. Spoelstra did the complete opposite by outing the Heat players, which resulted in alienating himself even further from the team.

I think LeBron's shoulder into Spoelstra heading into a timeout was his way of showing his lack of appreciation for his head coach, and while it wasn't the most professional move, it was certainly warranted.

The best player response to this whole crying situation is Metta World Peace's response on NBA on TNT

Kenyon Martin Apparently Isn't Fond of Buttered Popcorn in His Car

4 of 8

Well at least one thing is clear after watching that video of K-Mart threatening his teammates—Martin isn't thrilled about having his Range Rover filled with buttered popcorn.

I mean, it's definitely an odd prank to fill someones car with buttered popcorn, but when you're a professional athlete, you've got to be ready to deal with stupid pranks like that.

Martin thought his best way of dealing with this prank was to go into the locker room and threaten all of his teammates. If I was the guy who filled his Range Rover with that popcorn, I would have left the locker room and immediately asked for a trade, as K-Mart isn't the kind of guy who I'd want to mess with.

It later came out that the perpetrator was J.R. Smith's driver, and while he apologized to Martin, K-Mart apparently rejected his apology, which is even more of a bonehead move than K-Mart's initial reaction to the prank itself.

Delonte West's "We Gonna Play with a Sock" Moment

5 of 8

Among the many things Delonte West knows how to do, like carrying loaded shotguns in a violin case and giving players mid-game wet willies, he apparently knows how to play basketball with a sock.

When a reporter asked West about his thoughts on the NBA ditching the composite ball and returning to the leather ball that's been used for quite some time, West responded with this memorable quite:

"You know I never really payed that much attention to it. I'm just a player. I'm a player Greg and I just play with whatever they put...If we going to play with a sock, we going to play with a sock."

It looks like West was putting on socks as the interviewer asked him the question, so that's probably where he got that thought from, but either way it's still an absolutely classic moment.

Shaquille O'Neal Goes Crazy over $35,000 Fine

6 of 8

Shaquille O'Neal is certainly known for being quite a character—enter Kazaam reference here—and one of his best locker room moments came in the later years of his career when he was with the Boston Celtics.

O'Neal was informed that he was going to be fined $35,000, which is a nice chunk of money for most people, and that sent him into a fit of comical rage with his teammate Paul Pierce.

It must be nice to be able to joke about losing $35,000, because if I lost that amount I wouldn't be joking around all that much as I wouldn't have much money left in my bank account. While this might not necessarily be a "boneheaded" moment, it's certainly a funny one.

Kevin Garnett Tells Craig Sager to Burn His Suit...and Thong

7 of 8

Kevin Garnett is one of the most outspoken players in the history of the NBA, and he put that on display in his infamous interview with Craig Sager and his pink/salmon colored suit.

Garnett not only calls out Sager for wearing another one of his vibrant suits, he also tells him that he should go home and burn it, along with the suspected thong he's wearing.

I don't know what Sager actually did with that suit, but if Garnett told me that I needed to burn the suit I was wearing, I'd go home immediately and burn it, and anything else that looks similar to it.

Garnett falls right into the "crazy mo-fo" category in my books, and the fact that he thought it was necessary to give fashion advice to Craig Sager just adds to his level of insanity.

Amar'e Stoudemire's Fist Fight with a Fire Hydrant

8 of 8

Raise your hand if you\e ever punched a fire extinguisher and ended up with stitches that made your hand look like a baseball. The only person you'll see with his hand raised will undoubtedly be Amar'e Stoudemire.

I think it's safe to say that Amar'e is in small group of people who've fought a fire extinguisher and lost, which is quite an embarrassment. Just the fact that Amar'e thought it would be smart to punch a big piece of glass out of anger earns him a top spot in the list of bonehead locker room moments.

While this incident didn't technically happen in a locker room, it's boneheaded enough to make the list, as I'm sure the Knicks have banned fire extinguishers from being allowed in their locker room from this point on.
