Texas Football: Latest News, Injuries and Team Updates

Spring ball is all over for the Texas Longhorns, and we won't see them for a couple more months, when the season picks back up again. But with college football, the news never stops, and there's something always going on.

The Longhorns return the majority of their starters from a year ago, had a great spring and should be one of the favorites to win the Big 12 heading into the year.

With there being a couple of months off before the regular season arrives, here is some news that you may have missed over the last couple of weeks concerning your Texas Longhorns.

Injuries

Cornerback Quandre Diggs missed the majority of the spring due to surgery to repair a left wrist injury. He's expected to make a full recovery and be ready by the time the fall arrives. Diggs saw significant time last year as a freshman and finished the year with four interceptions, 15 passes broken up and 49 tackles.

Sophomore wide receiver Bryant Jackson also needed surgery to repair a broken right foot. Jackson came in as a safety, but he made the transition to wide receiver last season. He finished the year with only one reception, and missing valuable practice time to due to recovery isn't going to allow him to move up the depth chart.

Wide receiver Miles Onyegbule will be sidelined at least until August due to a torn left pectoral muscle. He was a freshman last season and caught a total of four passes for 51 yards, including a 20-yard reception in the game against Missouri.

Red River Rivalry Likely to Stay in the Cotton Bowl

It's not official yet, but according to the Dallas Morning News, the Red River Rivalry will stay in the Cotton Bowl through year 2020.

“They’ve both indicated we’ve got a deal, I’m just waiting to get them signed up,” says former Schepps Dairy President Pete Schenkel. “There are still several steps; Texas has to go through their Board of Regents. But verbally DeLoss [Dodds, UT's athletics director] has agreed; same goes with Joe [Castiglione, athletics director] at Oklahoma.”

What seems to be holding the deal up is that the city of Dallas must approve the renovations for the stadium. It's expected that the city will spend over $25 million to renovate the stadium, which will likely keep one of the greatest rivalries in the sport in the Cotton Bowl.

The current deal expires after the 2015 season.

Texas Ends Up No. 22 on the New ESPN Preseason Poll

While we're waiting for the real college football rankings to be released in a couple of months, ESPN has put together their preseason Top 25. While the top five includes USC, LSU, Alabama, Oregon and Oklahoma, the Texas Longhorns are ranked No. 22.

Texas has struggled the last couple of seasons, finishing with a combined 13-12 record the last two years. This is the season that many believe they can turn things around, as they bring back majority of their starters and have a top-notch defense.
