2012 NFL Mock Draft Round 2: First-Round Talents That Will Slide to Lucky Teams

Andrew KulhaMay 31, 2018

There are a handful of players with first-round talent that will fall to the second round in the 2012 NFL draft, and a few lucky teams are going to be very happy to stop their fall.

The first round of the NFL draft is where teams pick their superstars, but it's the second round where they can really make or break their futures.

It happens every year—players slide and needs trump value, but eventually the free fall stops and a very talented player is taken in the second round.

Their value there is tremendous, and the team that picks him comes away as the winner.

If you want to scope out my first-round mock before moving on, here you go.

When you're ready, here's a look at my mock for the second round, with an emphasis on some first-round talents:

Please Note: This mock was written before the first round of the 2012 NFL draft, so not all of the picks apply as of the end of the first round.

33. St. Louis Rams: Kendall Reyes, DT, Connecticut

The Rams went with offense in the first round, so taking Reyes will be a good complement to that pick on defense.

34. Indianapolis Colts: Coby Fleener, TE, Stanford

Fleener played with Andrew Luck and a tight end can be a young quarterbacks best friend.

35. Minnesota Vikings: Jamell Fleming, CB, Oklahoma

After passing up on Morris Claiborne in Round 1 the Vikings would be smart to address corner here.

Barron is a first-round talent, but he's slid because of a double hernia that kept him out of the combine. He's had some durability concerns—the double hernia and a torn pectoral muscle in 2010—but is a fantastic pickup here considering some him him as a top-15 talent.

37. Cleveland Browns: Kelechi Osemele, OG, Iowa State

Osemele is a big, physical presence that can play guard or tackle, but will be a better guard in the NFL.

38. Jacksonville Jaguars: Nick Toon, WR, Wisconsin

Toon is a big, physical possession receiver that will do well in this offense.

39. St. Louis Rams (from Redskins): Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse

The Rams will continue fortifying their defense with this pick.

40. Carolina Panthers: Vinny Curry, DE, Marshall

After taking Michael Brockers in the first round, the pickup of Curry here will make the Jaguars' line incredibly young and talented.

41. Buffalo Bills: Zach Brown, OLB, Carolina

Some would say Brown is a first-rounder, even though I don't agree. I do think he's a good pickup here, though.

42. Miami Dolphins: Marvin Jones, WR, California

Jones is very fast, and the Dolphins are going to need to give their rookie quarterback a deep threat.

43. Seattle Seahawks: Brian Quick, WR, Appalachian State

The 'Hawks went defense in Round 1, but now I see a switch to offense in order to give Matt Flynn some options.

44. Kansas City Chiefs: Casey Hayward, CB, Vanderbilt

Hayward is going to be a good corner in this league and presents a great value here.

45. Dallas Cowboys: Harrison Smith, SS, Notre Dame

Many have the Cowboys going with Mark Barron in Round 1, but I see them looking elsewhere and picking up Smith here, which isn't half bad.

46. Philadelphia Eagles: Devon Still, DT, Penn State

Still is a player that's been mocked in the first round a few times, so he presents a great value for a team that needs defensive help.

47. New York Jets: A.J. Jenkins, WR, Illinois

Quick receiver with good hands and good route-running skills. The Jets need to give Mark Sanchez or Tim Tebow some help at receiver.

48. New England Patriots (from Raiders): Brandon Boykin, CB, Georgia

Boykin is an extremely versatile corner that was a returner and played on offense at Georgia. He's a perfect fit for Bill Belichick.

49. San Diego Chargers: Lavonte David, OLB, Nebraska

The Chargers need to fill a hole with this pick, and David will be a solid player.

50. Chicago Bears: Jared Crick, DE, Nebraska

Crick has first-round talent and he's extremely versatile. This is a great pick for a team with an already strong defensive front.

51. Philadelphia Eagles (From Cardinals): QB, Brandon Weeden, Oklahoma State

The Eagles need to find a capable backup quarterback for Michael Vick, and perhaps they think about the future with this pick.

52. Tennessee Titans: Andre Branch, DE, Clemson

Branch is an early second-round talent, so this is as close to a steal as the Titans will get.

53. Cincinnati Bengals: Mike Martin, DT, Michigan

Aggressive defensive tackle with a non-stop motor. He should be a great fit on this defense.

54. Detroit Lions: Mitchell Schwartz, OT, California

After addressing the glaring need at corner in Round 1, the Lions will think for the future with this pick.

55. Atlanta Falcons: Orson Charles, TE, Georgia

This is a stretch, but Tony Gonzales can't play forever, and Charles is a quick tight end and a hometown player.

56. Pittsburgh Steelers: Josh Chapman, DT, Alabama

Chapman is a huge, aggressive nose tackle that will anchor this defensive line in the future.

57. Denver Broncos: Lamar Miller, RB, Miami (FL.)

Lamar Miller is the second-best running back in the 2012 NFL draft, and the Broncos are able to steal him here at No. 57 overall.

Miller has good vision, is incredibly fast and hits the hole hard. He runs with his shoulders in front of him and gets good downhill momentum, but he still possesses an elusiveness and agility. He also was a kick returner in college.

The Broncos' running back situation is up in the air, so this is a fantastic pick.

58. Houston Texans: Alameda Ta'amu, DT, Washington

Ta'amu is a huge, gap-filling presence at nose tackle. He's 6'3'', 337 pounds, yet athletic. This is a great pick.

59. Green Bay Packers: Chris Polk, RB, Washington

If Lamar Miller is the second-best running back in this draft, then Polk is 2a. He's a big, physical runner at 5'11", 222 pounds, but he's got great speed and vision.

He's able to go in between the tackles, but he's quick enough to get to the second level and make people miss.

The Packers haven't had a true No. 1 running back for a while now ,and Polk is easily a first-round talent, so they'll gladly draft him at 59 overall.

60. Baltimore Ravens: George Iloka, FS, Boise State

This is a pick the Ravens will make for depth, and for the future.

61. San Francisco 49ers: Josh Robinson, CB, USF

The 49ers don't have many holes, so they can draft a corner here and add some much needed depth.

62. New England Patriots: Bobby Wagner, OLB, Utah State

Taking another player to add to the front seven is a good idea, especially with no corners worth a second-round pick here.

63. New York Giants: Greg Childs, WR, Arkansas

Childs is an extremely underrated prospects. If it weren't for injury battles, he'd be one of the bigger wideout names in this draft.
