College Football Recruiting 2013: Power Ranking the Top 10 Offensive Linemen
This year's class of offensive linemen is a solid group, but I don't think it's as strong as last year's group. The strength of the 2013 overall class is in the quarterbacks and running backs right now.
Yet, this 2013 group does feature some prime-time players who will be starters in college. For this read, I'm just going to rank the top 10 offensive trench men recruits for 2013.
Let's get started.
10. Austin Golson
1 of 10Golson is a 6'6", 280-pound tackle prospect who has solid snap quickness and agility. He's not a mauler, but he can wall-off and out-position his targets, get leverage and sustain.
As a pass-protector, Golson shows good length to keep blockers out of his body, solid feet to mirror rushers and he can wash away well in the pocket.
He's committed to Florida State.
9. David Dawson
2 of 10A 6'3", 300-pound O-lineman, Dawson likely will be an OG in college. He shows a great ability to fire out with good pad level, plays big at the point of attack and rolls his hips upon contact as a drive blocker.
Against the pass, Dawson has very good set quickness, can anchor with ease versus power and holds his own versus speed in space.
Dawson is committed to Michigan.
8. Ethan Pocic
3 of 10Pocic is a 6'6", 285-pounder who can maul and finish in the run game. Think of him as a poor man's Christian Westerman, as Pocic is physical as a run-blocker, plays with leverage and moves targets off their spots.
Pocic is a better short setter as a pass-protector because it plays into his nastiness as an O-lineman. He loves to punch, get his hands set on a target and control in short space.
7. Kent Perkins
4 of 10Perkins currently tops out at 6'5" and 295 pounds. He is very athletic for a big man on the edges, and he shows good bend, agility and can mirror well against the rush.
Perkins isn't a nasty man like Pocic is, but he'll work each snap versus the run. He can scoop to the second level and is productive in space.
Texas has his commitment.
6. Darius James
5 of 10James is likely going to be a center in college, and he has the tools to be a great one. His feet are light and active, he will mix it up with anyone and he's very athletic for a 6'5", 320-pound lineman.
James bends well, can slide and mirror with ease and has the ability to make blocks on the second level. He'll drive block against the run and will try to finish.
He's committed to Texas.
5. Ty Crowder
6 of 10Crowder is a great guard prospect who stands at 6'2" and 325 pounds. He's very nasty and downright mean in the interior O-line.
Crowder excels as a run-blocker, plays tough at the point of attack and has good power. He'll explode to engage a target and will stack 'em up and steer 'em out of the way to create a good hole for his back. He's at his best in a phone booth as a pass-protector.
4. Jake Raulerson
7 of 10Raulerson is a versatile O-line prospect who can play an array of positions, even OLB. He stands at 6'5" and 250 pounds.
What, that's too smallish for you?
So what, because Raulerson will maul his opponents in the run game, is as a tough as they come and can be overwhelmingly physical. Combine that with quick feet, athleticism, agility and balance, and you can see why once he tacks on some girth he's going to be a good one.
Raulerson is committed to Texas.
3. Dorian Johnson
8 of 10At 6'6" and 285 pounds, Johnson is from Pennsylvania and has great snap quickness as well as pop in his punch. He can get under a target's pads and has the strength to overpower them at the point of attack.
With the athleticism to execute traps and pulls, Johnson also has good pass-protection skills. He's quick and balanced in his sets, and he is very patient going against rushers.
2. Patrick Kugler
9 of 10I really like Kugler as a prospect. The 6'4", 275-pounder hails from Pennsylvania, is the son of a coach and is the top OG on my board for 2013.
Kugler plays OT right now, but he's physical, nasty and has excellent technique. He will be a great run-blocker, he finishes well and is very strong at the point of attack.
Kugler is committed to Michigan.
1. Laremy Tunsil
10 of 10Tunsil doesn't look like an O-lineman, but then you see that he's already 6'6" and 285 pounds, and you know he can tack on 30 or 40 more pounds with ease.
What makes Tunsil so coveted is that he is so agile for his size, has excellent length and really plays with great bend. He's not overly strong, but he competes in the run game and has a very high ceiling.
