European Football Roundup: Real Madrid Win Classico, Dortmund Keep Title & More
Saturday saw Borussia Dortmund lock up their second straight German Bundesliga title with a victory over rivals Borussia Monchengladbach.
Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho and Cristiano Ronaldo finally answered some critics, and the English race for Champions League action next season continues to build and get better.
Check out the major news from Saturday's results around the European continent.
Tottenham Upset by QPR
1 of 9The English Premier League had another twist in the race for the Champions League places on Saturday when Queens Park Rangers secured another top-half scalp with a 1-0 victory over Tottenham.
Adel Taraabt finally looks to be fitting back into the side he helped win promotion last campaign, after scoring what would be the winning goal for his club against their fellow Londoners.
His temper, however, got the best of him as he was sent off at the 78th minute. But the three points will mean more than anything to Rangers.
Newcastle Back in the Top Four
2 of 9Alan Pardew continues to overachieve what was expected of Newcastle United this season, as he has led them back into the top four with only four more games left in the campaign.
Shrewd signings and some great football all year have seen the Magpies' second season back in the EPL look like they never left.
A 3-0 victory over Stoke City sent the Northern club three points clear into the top four above Tottenham.
Middlesbrough Take Down Southampton
3 of 9Southampton needed a win to guarantee their place in the Premier League next season.
However, Middlesbrough managed a 2-1 victory at home to get to within a win two points of the final playoff spot in the Championship.
West Ham will be thankful for the Saints loss. A win puts them to within two victories of stealing the second place automatic promotion spot if they can take full points from their next two matches, and Southampton fail to win their final game of the season.
Real Madrid Win El Classico
4 of 9Real Madrid did something they have done rarely over the last few years: they beat Barcelona.
But beyond that they did it at the Catalans' home at Camp Nou.
A 2-1 victory for Madrid was sealed by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo, who sees his side move seven points clear atop La Liga standings with four games to go.
Napoli Back in Europe
5 of 9Napoli fired themselves back inside the Italian top five to take what could be a short-lived spot in the UEFA Europa League places.
They will hold their position as AS Roma failed to take points against Juventus on Sunday.
However, the Old Lady are yet to lose in the Serie A campaign, while Roma continue to battle with consistent form.
Borussia Dortmund Retain Bundesliga Title
6 of 9Borussia Dortmund made it two in a row at the top of the German Bundesliga with their victory over local rivals Borussia Monchengladbach.
Goals from young stars Ivan Perisic and Shinji Kagawa saw the club take a 2-0 victory at home to retain their title despite Bayern Munich's 2-1 win over Werder Bremen.
Montpellier Strengthen French Title Bid
7 of 9Another victory for Montepellier saw the French club move five points clear of second place Paris Saint-Germain.
They currently hold seven points above defending champions Lille in Ligue 1 standings, who also won on Saturday.
Dinamo Beat CSKA
8 of 9A Moscow derby between Dinamo Moscow and form-lacking CSKA Moscow saw the latter fail to win a match once again.
CSKA have only taken two points from their last 15 available, and have dropped to fourth in the Russian Premier league, while Dinamo's victory saw them leap to second.
Conclusion
9 of 9The weekend is only half over with more drama and action to come on Sunday across Europe.
