2012 NFL Mock Draft: 1st-Round Picks Who Will Make Biggest Immediate Impact

Andrew KulhaApr 22, 2012

It's a forgone conclusion that Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Trent Richardson will all make a huge impact on whichever team picks them in the 2012 NFL draft, but they aren't the only first-round prospects destined to make a big splash immediately.

In fact, I firmly believe that this draft is so deep that there will be immediate impact players taken all the way up until the mid-20s at the very least.

This is a great draft class and it's going to be stacked with names that will play big roles in 2012.

Here's my latest mock draft with an emphasis on some players I believe will make an immediate impact in the NFL.

1. Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford

The obvious impact here is that Luck will be the Colts starting quarterback for at least the next six or seven years.

2. Washington Redskins: Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor

Griffin III is the first legit quarterback the Redskins have had in a very long time. He's going to be a star player for their franchise.

3. Minnesota Vikings: Matt Kalil, OT, USC

Kalil is a franchise left tackle, there is no doubt about that.

4. Cleveland Browns: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama

Richardson is the best running back to come out of the draft in years. He's going to be a top-five overall back in the league his rookie season, and that will continue for the duration of his career barring injury.

He's got the ability to impact the offense in three ways. One, obviously is his ability to break off big runs. Two, he's very good out of the backfield as a pass catcher and he has good hands. Three, he's a good blocker that gets a solid base and knows where he has to be.

Richardson will make life much easier for Colt McCoy, and he'll change the dynamic of this offense.

5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Morris Claiborne, CB, LSU

Claiborne will be a lockdown corner in the NFL, and he makes this Buccaneers secondary much better.

6. St. Louis Rams: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State

Blackmon is going to be a much-needed addition at wideout for the Rams. He may not be a superstar, but he's going to be a great receiver for them.

7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Quinton Coples, DE, North Carolina

Coples is a player that's going to be taken because he has the potential to be a top-10 pick and a stud at defensive end, but there are some concerns about his effort. The Jaguars will take the shot here.

8. Miami Dolphins: Ryan Tannehill, QB, Texas A&M

I disagree with this pick 100 percent, but am growing more and more resigned to the fact that it's going to happen.

The Dolphins are desperate for a quarterback and they're not going to take a chance and wait until the second round, so they will make a huge reach here for Tannehill. The problem is, he is not worth the No. 8 pick by a long shot.

Graded on talent alone, Tannehill is a second- or third-round quarterback and he should not be starting right away in the NFL.

Unfortunately, the Dolphins will pick him, start him, and the results will be disastrous.

Tannehill will make an immediate impact on his team, but in this case, I don't see it being a positive one.

I didn't say they'd all make a good impact...

9. Carolina Panthers: Dontari Poe, DT, Memphis

Huge defensive tackle that can penetrate the backfield and do more than just fill the gap.

10. Buffalo Bills: Riley Reiff, LT, Iowa

The Bills have made great moves to their roster in the offseason, so now they have to make a safe and sure pick. Reiff is going to be a solid starter for their offensive line.

11. Kansas City Chiefs: David DeCastro, OG, Stanford

DeCastro is a near-flawless guard prospect and the Chiefs will gladly take him here at No. 11 overall. He's going to be an immediate addition to their offensive line, and his presence in the running game is going to make them very good.

12. Seattle Seahawks: Melvin Ingram, DE, South Carolina

Ingram is a quick player that will be very effective on the edge in this defense.

13. Arizona Cardinals: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame

The Cardinals could go fundamental here, but instead they will take arguably the best receiver in the draft in hopes that he will grow into a star across from Larry Fitzgerald.

This team needs to make splash after losing out on Peyton Manning.

14. Dallas Cowboys: Michael Brockers, DT, LSU

Brockers could develop into a star on this defensive line. He's a physical specimen and has the talent to dominate when added to this front line.

15. Philadelphia Eagles: Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College

Ball-hawk linebacker that will make a lot of tackles. This is obviously a huge need for a defense that struggled to stop the ball-carrier last year.

16. New York Jets: Courtney Upshaw, LB/DE Alabama

Versatile defender that can play with his hand in the dirt or standing up, and he'll be a valuable weapon for the defensive-minded Rex Ryan.

17. Cincinnati Bengals: Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor

Wright has great speed and separation as a receiver. He'll be a great addition across from A.J. Green.

18. San Diego Chargers: Nick Perry, DE, USC

Perry is slightly under the radar, but he has the chance to be a great pass-rushing end in the NFL.

19. Chicago Bears: Cordy Glenn, OT/G, Georgia

The Bears took care of their offensive woes by bringing in Brandon Marshall. They'll use this pick to protect Jay Cutler and give him the time he needs.

20. Tennessee Titans: Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin

The Titans won't be able to effectively fill this need anywhere else in the draft, so they'll stretch just a bit for Konz here.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Stephon Gilmore, CB, South Carolina

Gilmore has the ability to come in and be a starter on day one for this Bengals secondary.

22. Cleveland Browns: Alshon Jeffery, WR, South Carolina

Jeffery is an absolute steal here at No. 22, and he's going to play a huge role for the Browns. All the talk around the Browns right now centers around quarterback Colt McCoy and whether or not he has what it takes to be the starter for this team.

Many people think the Browns need to draft a quarterback early, but by taking Richardson at No. 4 and then getting Jeffery here, they will be setting McCoy up for offensive success.

Jeffery has the size, speed and agility to be a true deep threat, and he'll be the No.1 receiver on this team right away.

23. Detroit Lions: Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois

Mercilus is a pass-rushing specialist and the Lions need to start thinking about the future of their defensive end position. This is a very good, forward-thinking pick.

24. Pittsburgh Steelers: Mike Adams, LT, Ohio State

The Steelers need to fix their offensive line and Adams has great potential. He's very raw and very big. He needs to be coached up on his fundamentals.

25. Denver Broncos: Jonathan Martin, LT, Stanford

Protecting Peyton Manning is a must this season and the Broncos offensive line is pretty inept. Martin is a stretch at No. 25, but he comes from a good system and can be very good with proper coaching.

26. Houston Texans: Mohamed Sanu, WR, Rutgers

The Texans need to get a receiver they can put across from Andre Johnson, and Sanu has the speed and agility to be a very good deep threat.

27. New England Patriots (via Saints): Chandler Jones, DE, Syracuse

His production wasn't incredible at Syracuse, but Jones has the physical tools to be a great player on this versatile defensive front.

28. Green Bay Packers: Shea McClellin, DE/OLB, Boise State

The Packers need to get a pass rush across from Clay Matthews, and McClellin would be a great fit on this defense. He projects nicely into a 3-4 outside linebacker position and possesses everything the Packers would be looking for there.

He's got good speed and agility, is very aggressive and can get in the backfield and cause a ruckus.

McClellin also has a good motor like Matthews, so those two coming off the edge will make offensive lineman woozy

The Packers defense struggled greatly without a rush on the weak side, but McClellin will be a huge addition there and will make an immediate impact.

29. Baltimore Ravens: Stephen Hill, WR, Georgia Tech

The Ravens need to get a legitimate deep threat for Joe Flacco, and Hill has the ability to really stretch the field.

30. San Francisco 49ers: Kelechi Osemele, G, Iowa State

The 49ers took care of a lot of needs in the offseason, but the offensive line still needs work. Osemele is big and has good intangibles, but he has poor fundamentals. With this coaching staff though, he could be good in time.

31. New England Patriots: Jerel Worthy, DT, Michigan State

Worthy is an extreme aggressive defensive tackle that thrives at getting penetration at the line of scrimmage. He'll be a valuable addition to this defense.

32: New York Giants: Chris Polk, RB, Washington

The Giants don't have Brandon Jacobs anymore, so their offense is lacking the heavy-hitting downhill runner. Polk is a luxury here at No. 32, but he has the skills to be much better than Jacobs was.
