Drake Dunsmore to Buccaneers: Video Highlights, Analysis and Scouting Report
Drake Dunsmore, formerly of the Northwestern Wildcats, is a very versatile player, which makes him an extremely valuable pickup in the 2012 NFL draft.
Dunsmore can play effectively in the backfield as an H-back or fullback, and he can also play on the line of scrimmage as a tight end.
He's athletic and can make plays, and his versatility will allow him to play multiple roles on offense.
What Dunsmore Brings to the Team
Dunsmore's versatility makes him a very good pickup. He's officially listed as a tight end on NFL.com, but at only 6'2'', 241 he may not have the size to be all that effective at the line of scrimmage on a consistent basis.
That being said, he can play a role as an H-back running routes out of the backfield, or perhaps even split out.
The long and short of Dunsmore is that he can be a mismatch if utilized properly.
What Experts Are Saying
Here's a take on Dunsmore from the staff over at sidelinescouting.com:
"Terrific receiving threat, played more tight end in college than fullback; can be a weapon running routes out of the backfield, has enough speed to be a mismatch against linebackers... Looks like an oversized wide receiver, can make the acrobatic catch... Very strong build, has a large upper body...
"
Versatility and mismatch are the two words to focus on with Dunsmore. He's athletic, but he's kind of a "tweener." That can be a huge advantage if used correctly, though.
Rookie Impact
I would expect Dunsmore's athleticism and versatility to be a huge plus on special teams as a rookie. He'll need some time to develop a larger role in the NFL.
Pick Analysis
Like so many of the players picked down here, Dunsmore figures to be a special teams contributor and a backup for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, at least in his first season. The athletic and versatile Northwestern product can be used as either a fullback or tight end, and might even be a key role player in either capacity if used correctly.
