Golden State Warriors Rumors: Why Lamar Odom Makes No Sense
Disgruntled and frustrated Dallas Mavericks forward Lamar Odom parted ways with the team last weekend after a heated halftime exchange with owner Mark Cuban. Now the focus shifts to the next team that Odom will suit up for, and several teams are reportedly interested in his services. These teams include the Lakers, Clippers and Golden State Warriors.
The last team on that list is pretty interesting. The Warriors are on their way to another sub .500 season, another year spent "rebuilding." Signing Odom for the rest of the season would increase publicity within the public and fans, and could also give the Warriors a veteran and reliable big man — something they desperately need.
But that's where the speculation ends. Because signing Lamar Odom would make absolutely no sense for the Golden State Warriors. None.
Here are a few reasons why.
They Don't Have the Money
1 of 3Rusty Simmons reports:
"The Warriors don't have the cap space to take on Odom's $8.2 million salary. They'd have to make a trade that probably would include Richard Jefferson or Dorell Wright to get Odom. They also could hope Odom would accept the mid-level exception or less to play in Oakland after being bought out by Dallas.
"
The only way the Warriors can sign Odom is with their mid-level exception, which is worth $5.6 million. Odom would have to take a huge pay cut to play for Golden State. (Face it, nobody would want to take less money to play for the Golden State Warriors).
They Don't Need Him
2 of 3It doesn't take a hardcore fan to look at the Golden State Warriors and recognize the fact that they have absolutely no use for Lamar Odom.
Odom is basically a washed-up veteran in the midst of the worst season in his career who is also dealing with a few personal issues (more on that on the next slide).
What's more, Odom will not be motivated to play for a "rebuilding" team. If he can't play inspired basketball with the defending NBA champion Dallas Mavericks, odds are that the Golden State Warriors are not the right fit for him.
Just to reiterate, the Warriors don't need him. They already have eight forwards/centers on their roster, and that does not include the hopeful lottery draft pick they will add. In the end, it is not worth spending millions of dollars on a washed up player who is way past his prime, unmotivated and uninspired to play.
The Kardashian Factor
3 of 3For those of you living under a rock, Lamar Odom is married to one Khloe Kardashian, whose name itself inspires hatred and lewd remarks from any average American.
Now that Odom is jobless, the rumors will begin to swirl about a possible divorce, one that Kardashian denies.
It seems as if Lamar will be sidetracked by his wife's adventures, and therefore take away from his relationship with his teammates.
In simple terms, the word Kardashian should not be mentioned around any sports franchise in the near future. Hopefully, the Warriors do not take that bait.
So, let's recap. Lamar Odom is an expensive, washed-up, unmotivated and uninspired veteran with personal issues, and he has just been released by a contending team. Imagine that you are the GM of the Golden State Warriors.
Would you sign him?
