Winners and Losers of the Georgia Spring Football Game
The G-Day game is over which means spring football has come to an end in Athens. The game started off slow, but both the Red team and the Black team were able to make plays in the fourth quarter, and the game ended up being really compelling.
There were a few players who stood out and really made a case for more playing time in the fall. There were also some players who could have done better and will look to improve between now and September 1 when the season begins.
Here are the winners and losers of G-Day 2012.
Winner: Ken Malcome
1 of 5Ken Malcome got the start for the Red team, which consisted of the first-team offense.
He did not disappoint, as he scored two touchdowns to lead the Red team to a win. He has impressed a lot of people during practice, and it paid off on Saturday.
Will he be the No. 1 back when fall rolls around? That remains to be seen, because the competition is going to be fierce with Todd Gurley, Richard Samuel, Keith Marshall and another winner from G-Day.
Winner: Isaiah Crowell
2 of 5Isiah Crowell did not have the same numbers as Malcome, but he was able to run the ball effectively when he needed.
Crowell ended the say with 10 carries for 39 yards, but the most important thing is that he looked healthy, which was not the case the last half of the season.
Crowell has work to do, but he has made great strides this spring.
Loser: Aaron Murray
3 of 5I'm not saying that Aaron Murray had a bad game. In fact, he had some nice throws including the 33-yard touchdown pass to Tavarres King. But he only completed 41 percent of his passes, and that can't happen once the season begins.
Murray had a great 2011 season, but the one thing he could have done better is accuracy. In order for him to take that next step, he has to complete over 60 percent of his passes, which I think he will do because he's a guy that's willing to do whatever it takes to help his team win.
Winner: Christian LeMay
4 of 5Out of the five quarterbacks who played during G-Day, Christian LeMay was the most sharp. Despite the interception, he completed seven of his 10 passes and had a nice 66-yard touchdown pass to Jay Rome in the fourth quarter.
The Georgia coaching staff wanted to see if LeMay would be the right fit for the No. 2 spot since they're considering redshirting Hutson Mason.
After today's performance, I think the coaches know the answer to that question.
Winner: Jay Rome
5 of 5As mentioned earlier, Rome caught a 66-yard touchdown pass from LeMay, and it would have been the play of the game if the Black team made the two-point conversion to give them the potential win.
Rome had an outstanding spring, and it looks like he is on his way to a very successful career. With his size, speed and athleticism, don't be surprised if he makes All-SEC this season.
