5 Reasons Why FC Barcelona's Dominance Could Last Another Decade

Nathan JudahJun 7, 2018

The current Barcelona side is arguably the best team to ever grace world football.

That is the current belief between players and managers both past and present, together with almost every single sports journalist and analyst (except if you live in Madrid).

Pep Guardiola's side have produced football that other teams can only dream about with their slick pass-and-move football that is almost unplayable.

The last three years at Camp Nou have yielded an unprecedented 11 trophies, including back-to-back La Liga Championships, two Champions League titles, two UEFA Super Cups and two FIFA World Club Cups.

The list goes on and will undoubtedly grow this season with the club currently awaiting a Champions League semifinal tie with Chelsea and chasing a faltering Real Madrid to win yet another La Liga.

But when is that watershed moment going to come? When will this great team become good?

Many have already predicted Barcelona's downfall with very limited success.

The fact is there is more of a reason to believe they will continue to get stronger and dominate football not just for the two or three more years—but for the next decade.

Here are five reasons why...

5) Pep Guardiola

The best team in the world have the best manager in the world and that is a devastating combination for anyone to overcome.

Guardiola has been linked with other clubs (especially in England), but all the signs suggest the 41-year-old will be at the helm for a long time to come—and that is great news for both short- and long-term success.

The Spaniard believes success comes in four- or five-year managerial cycles, leaving many to speculate he could walk away from the Catalan giants for a new challenge elsewhere.

But the Barcelona board know the man who they want and he's the man currently in charge. If Guardiola does sign a new contract, that could mean at least another six or seven years.

If Guardiola does leave, they will not be short of excellent replacements with current Roma boss Luis Enrique and Athletic Bilbao's Marcelo Bielsa the two favourites.

But all eyes are on the current boss leading a new era of Barcelona dominance.

4) Barca Youngsters

A 4-0 win over Bate Borisov in the Champions League last December would have raised few eyebrows to people reading the score the following morning, but the team sheet should have sent shock-waves through world football—it's a devastating sign of things to come.

Guardiola threw a host of Academy graduates into the starting lineup, resulting in team's average age being just 21 years old.

19-year-old midfield sensation Sergi Roberto opened the scoring whilst right-back Martin Montoya also got on the score sheet in an incredibly one-sided encounter.

The 11 also included brothers Thiago Alcantara and 18-year-old Rafinha.

Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas and Victor Valdes all watched on as the future of Barcelona had Guardiola purring with delight.

3) Transfer Market Dominance

There is no draft in football; the worst does not get the best up-and-coming player. The best players want to play for the best clubs, making the strong even stronger.

Barcelona have the name, the success and the financial clout to go after the very best young talents in the world to aid their already stunning superstars and in turn securing the long-term success of the club.

Brazilian striker Neymar is the latest man on the wanted list and it looks like the Catalan giants are winning their tug-of-war with Juventus for the Santos forward.

Add to that the likes of Jordi Alba to cover the much maligned left-back position and AC Milan's Thiago Silva—there is certainly lots to be excited about.

But Neymar's addition could be the most telling. His addition would likely see Fabregas drop into a deeper role alongside Iniesta.

He is, without a doubt, the most exciting prospect in world football and a potential partnership with Messi would be explosive.

2) Barcelona the Brand

Although there has been criticism from some some quarters for their deal with the Qatar Foundation, Barcelona still thankfully carry the UNICEF logo.

There seems to be an increased intent from the Board in maintaining Barcelona the brand as the biggest and most profitable club in the world.

A recent deal with Boca Juniors will give them first refusal on the very top Argentinean talent, while their first corporate shirt sponsorship secures them undoubted financial dominance in the transfer market for many years to come.

But with the Academy so strong, many admire the club's approach of nurturing the best talent and bringing in the very best to supplement what they already have, resulting in worldwide praise from all quarters.

The future looks incredibly bright off the pitch and that can only help results on it.

1) Lionel Messi

What more superlatives can you use to describe the best player of the modern era and probably the best player to have ever lived?

Maradona and Pele could well argue that fact, but there are plenty who believe that the little Argentinean forward gracing Camp Nou each week is untouchable.

Three consecutive Ballon d'Or awards tops an endless list of personal and team achievements that a veteran professional can only dream about.

But the scary thing is that the greatest player of the modern era is still just 24 years old!

That must send shivers through every defender in world football, because on his day (and there are plenty of them), Messi is simply unplayable.

He is the franchise player, not only to Barcelona, but also to football itself.

Why will Barcelona dominate for the next decade? Because this man will still be at the club.
