Norwich City: 8 Things About Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) Win
I think it is fair to say that the 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur (Spurs) was the biggest of Norwich City's season so far.
I wasn't actually going to do a review for this game. Fixtures have been coming thick and fast with the game against Everton on Saturday (April 7), and a game coming up this Saturday (April 14). But I am not one to let my fans down.
And following a request from one of my Twitter followers, I have decided to put one together. This is a result for Canary fans to enjoy, so why not celebrate it!
Paul Lambert Did a Job on Harry's Boys
1 of 8I am sick of hearing about the bad run of form that Spurs have been on, or the fact that Harry Redknapp has been unsettled by the England job.
Prior to Norwich's win over Spurs, Paul Lambert's side have been on a run of just one win in seven games. And that one win came against bottom club Wolves.
The result had little to do with current form, and everything to do with the game-plan that Paul Lambert used. The Canaries pressed the ball at every opportunity and were not afraid to attack when they had the opportunity.
The first goal was typically of this pressure and wiliness to attack. The second was a pure thunderbolt from Elliott Bennett, which will not get the attention or coverage that it deserves.
The Game Shows That Norwich and Lambert Have Learned from Earlier Game
2 of 8Cast your mind back to the Carrow Road game (December 27). Spurs bossed the game and gave Norwich a bit of a footballing lesson. Gareth Bale scored two goals that day and the London side won 2-0.
Lambert, though, is a real academic of the game. And every defeats hurts him deep. He is the same as a manager as he was as a player, a born winner!
Defeats don't go down so well with winners. So the Norwich City manager will have analyzed that game to death to work out what went wrong and find a weakness. He worked out how to beat them and then executed his plan perfectly.
This is also something that he did on Swansea. Another defeat that will have hurt Lambert deep was the game against Manchester City. It was a game that the blue side of Manchester won 5-1. So, Lambert will be on another revenge mission.
Kyle Naughton Is Better Than Kyle Walker
3 of 8Kyle Naughton has spent the season on loan at Norwich City from Spurs. One of the reasons that he was loaned out was because that Spurs consider Kyle Walker as their first choice right-back.
However, Walker did not cover himself in glory with his performance at White Hart Lane. If Norwich City can sign Naughton in the summer they will have some player on their hands. And arguably a better prospect than Kyle Walker.
The Whole Bradley Johnson Debate
4 of 8Bradley Johnson was a surprise inclusion in the starting lineup against Spurs. He certainly had a very good game, but he also divides opinion. Is he the holding midfield answer in Norwich's midfield? Do Norwich even need a holding midfielder of his type? Should he be in the team ahead of Andrew Surman and David Fox?
These are all questions for Lambert to consider. I remain in the he still has plenty to prove camp and it will be interesting to see if this is an area that Lambert strengthens in the summer.
Don't Forget the John Ruddy's Wonder Save
5 of 8Anthony Pilkington and Elliott Bennett will lead the plaudits for this win. However, John Ruddy also played a very important part. The wonder save from Assou-Ekotto effort played a crucial role in the final result and reinforced Ruddy's potential as an England goalkeeper.
A Victory for Paul Lambert's Rotation Policy
6 of 8Paul Lambert has enjoyed rotating his squad throughout the season. At times, I have questioned if this is the right approach. I have thought that we might be better off with settled side.
But it looks like Lambert knew what he was doing all along. He keeps his players fresh and ensures opposing managers are always guessing. Against Spurs, it worked a treat.
Goal-Scoring Pressure off the Strikers
7 of 8Anthony Pilkington scored his eighth Premier League goal of the season and fellow winger Elliott Bennett hit the back of the net for the first time this season. Sharing the goals around is something that Norwich will have to do moving forward.
It was also refreshing to see Bennett getting into a decent position, and then just hitting the shot. So often, do we see players getting into a good position and lose the ball. It is also a great sign that Bennett is finally adapting to Premier League football.
Time for Norwich City and Others to Get a Fairer Deal from Refs
8 of 8In the last game against Everton, there were a number of key decisions that went against Norwich. These include penalty calls and a possible sending off.
I was hoping that trend was not to continue. However, there was more of the same in the Spurs match. The Canaries were denied a penalty of three separate occasions. Only the ref will know why none of these decisions were given.
The situation does not seem to be only around Norwich, but it does come back to the old debate of the perceived bigger clubs getting the decisions. Some people are saying refs are missing a lot.
However, I am not sure it is so much a case of that. But rather, it is a lot easier to deny or give a decision against Norwich than Spurs or Manchester United. Rules should be rules and it should be the same for everyone. If the situation does not improve, then introduce technology to make sure the decisions are correct.
