11 Greatest Announcer Catch Phrases in World Football
What would this beautiful game called world football be without its commentary?
In many ways it would be fun to watch, but much of the sporting experience would be missing without the additional turn of phrase from those whose words we remember for years to come.
Announcers are the voice of football—the medium that brings the paraphrased reality of the situation straight to our ears as our eyes feast on the action.
Without all of those that remain famous for their words and not their faces or actions on the pitch, our experience of the beautiful game would lack much of the personality that makes it such a great part of our lives.
Andy Gray
1 of 12Andy Gray. His name is spoken these days with less enthusiasm than it may have in the past since he was canned by Sky Sports over his sexist remarks in January 2011.
However, he still has a laundry list of great catch phrases.
One of his most famous is "Take a bow, son," which usually comes after a tremendous strike, such as Steven Gerrard's against West Ham in the 2006 FA Cup Final at around the 30-second mark in the video above.
Chris Kamara
2 of 12Another Sky Sports announcer who has a famous catch phrase is Chris Kamara.
His simple-yet-always-reliable "It's unbelievable, Jeff," is useful for most any and all occasions.
Jon Champion
3 of 12ESPN and ITV announcer Jon Champion is a big fan of praising a partially effective tackle made by a defender.
He is always quick with his "Thou shalt not pass" whenever he gets the chance.
Tiziano Crudeli
4 of 12Although I have no understanding of Italian, Milan announcer Tiziano Crudeli has made himself famous for massive goal celebrations and commentary while sitting next to his rival announcers.
Alan Hansen
5 of 12Alan Hansen has been famous for always finding a way to discuss players of the Brazilian National Team.
"Everybody likes Brazil and we want the Brazilians to come out."
"I played against the Brazilians in `82, who were definitely the best team never to have won the World Cup."
Richard Keys
6 of 12The other victim of the sexist scandal, along with Andy Gray, Richard Keys had recently started to coin the catch phrase "Would you smash that?"
Martin Tyler
7 of 12Whether you listen to him in the FIFA Series or on Sky Sports, Martin Tyler's "He's a real bundle of energy" will always ring in the ears of football fans everywhere.
Andy Gray
8 of 12Andy Gray's "Oooh you beauty! What a hit, son! What a hit!" is truly worthy of its own slide.
Gary Neville
9 of 12Although he has not been around the announcers' booth long, former Manchester Untied defender Gary Neville is becoming a household name for his commentary.
Neville earned much recognition and flack for comparing the movements of Chelsea's David Luiz to those of a player on FIFA '12 controlled by a PlayStation controller:
"Whenever I watch him play, to me David Luiz looks like he's being controlled by a 10-year-old in the crowd on a PlayStation."
Joaquim Maria Puyal
10 of 12Famous and legendary Spanish radio and television commentator Joaquim Maria Puyal is one of the Catalan region and nationally recognized pioneers in radio.
Even if you do not speak Spanish, you most certainly can tell what two of his most favorite catch phrases are with a view of the video above.
Ray Hudson
11 of 12GOLTV's Ray Hudson has more catch phrases than I could honestly put on a single slide.
From Star Wars comparisons to any number of medieval phrases to modern-day slang, the announcer has something to keep any and all entertained.
