Chicago Bulls Rumors: Why Dwight Howard Isn't Worth Chicago's Time

Josh BenjaminJun 7, 2018

The old saying goes, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."  Such can be said for the Chicago Bulls now, as they own the top seed in the Eastern Conference and the best overall record in the NBA.  That being said, the fact that GM Gar Forman is looking to acquire center Dwight Howard is kind of ridiculous.

There's no doubt that Howard is the best center in the NBA.  This year alone, he's averaging 21.1 points, 15 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game and could be on his way to winning his fourth consecutive NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award.  All year long, rumors have swirled about him going everywhere from the New Jersey Nets to the Los Angeles Lakers as Magic fans have wrung their hands anxiously.

The Bulls recently emerged as a player for his services and while Howard would be a great addition to any team, Chicago simply does not need him.  Let's analyze their lineup.

First, there's reigning MVP Derrick Rose running the point.  He has been stellar once again this season and is averaging 22.5 points to go with a marvelous eight assists per game as he looks to create plays just as much as he tries to score.

At shooting guard, they have Ronnie Brewer starting as Rip Hamilton recovers from yet another injury.  Brewer isn't necessarily the best option at the 2-spot, but his defense is impeccable and always welcome.

Luol Deng continues to do phenomenal work at small forward, but he would most likely be part of any deal to acquire Howard.  Not only has he played great defense this year, but his three-point shooting has been off the charts as he has made 42 percent of his shots from downtown.

Heading into the frontcourt, the Toros have Carlos Boozer and Joakim Noah.  Love him or hate him, Boozer is a solid option at the four.  His numbers aren't quite what they were with the Utah Jazz, but that's because he's playing on a balanced team and isn't part of a one-sided offense.  He has adjusted his game to fit the approach of head coach Tom Thibodeau and his point guard Rose.

Noah is in a defensive league all his own.  He has finally settled into his role as a defense-first player and is averaging 10.4 rebounds per game and, most importantly, he hasn't missed any time due to injury this year.

That all being said, there really isn't any reason for the Chicago Bulls to pursue Dwight Howard.  Getting him would probably cost them Deng, Noah, possibly Boozer and a whole lot of draft picks.  Even if he does sign a contract with the team before the trade, why even bother?

The facts are simple.  The Bulls have the best record in the NBA and, as a result, don't even need to make any trades.
