NFL Draft: Trade Packages That Could Land Rams' Number 2 Pick, Robert Griffin

Gary DavenportFeb 23, 2012

According to Chris Wesseling of NBC Sports, the bidding has already started as to the asking price for the St. Louis Rams second overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft and the rights to presumably draft Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin.

Chris Wesseling tweeted this on February 23, 2012: Per @AdamSchefter, #Rams already talking trade with "multiple teams" about moving up to No. 2 bit.ly/xra2EG RG3 going 2nd #Sorryvikes

According to the Sun Sentinel, the Green Bay Packers may be looking to franchise tag backup Matt Flynn and then shop his services after re-upping tight end Jermichael Finley. The sticker price for both Flynn and the Griffin pick have likely gone up, and a limited supply and strong demand have created a seller's market for the Packers and Rams.

Where Flynn lands will have a huge impact on how the Griffin sweepstakes shakes out, but that doesn't mean we can't put on our speculating mittens (you have a pair, don't lie) and take a look at what it might require for each of the most commonly mentioned suitors for Griifin's services to snatch the pick from St. Louis.

TRADE PACKAGE ONE

Cleveland Browns trade 2012 pick 1.04, 2012 pick 1.22 and 2012 pick 4.23 to the St. Louis Rams for 2012 pick 1.02.

On its surface, this would appear to be the best fit for a Griffin deal, as the Browns have two first-round selections in this year's draft, as well an additional fourth-round pick acquired from the Atlanta Falcons in the Julio Jones trade last year.

However, this is the scenario that I consider the least likely to actually happen, as I'm not sure this package would even be enough to get Griffin nor do I know if the Browns front office will be willing to go this high given their numerous other needs on both sides of the ball.

TRADE PACKAGE TWO

Miami Dolphins trade 2012 pick 1.08, 2012 pick 2.10, 2013 pick 1.??, and 2013 pick 4.?? to the St, Louis Rams for 2012 pick 1.02.

According to the Washington Post, the Miami Dolphins are apparently ready to move on without quarterback Chad Henne, and although the the Dolphins are expected to be big players in the Matt Flynn derby (Miami head coach Joel Philbin was the offensive coordinator in Green Bay), you can bet that the 'Fins will be sniffing around Griffin as well.

Whether the Dolphins have the cajones to pull the trigger on this deal may have as much to do with how close they feel they are to being playoff contenders. Teams don't generally hand out hauls like this unless they think they're getting one of the final pieces of the puzzle.

TRADE PACKAGE THREE

Washington Redskins trade 2012 pick 1.06, 2012 pick 2.07, pick 4.14, 2013 pick 1.??, and pick 2.?? to St. Louis Rams for 2012 pick 1.02.

Uh-oh. here come the big guns.

The Washington Redskins need at the quarterback can best be summed up by listing the signal-callers on their roster.

John Beck and Rex Grossman.

See?

The Redskins have 18 picks in the next two drafts, and Washington owner Daniel Snyder has never been shy about making waves, so whether or not the Redskins land Griffin is all about how hard they decide to go after him.

Unless, of course, they sign Peyton Manning.

What, did you think I forgot the forehead? For shame, kind reader, for shame.
