Fabio Capello: Manager Right to Resign Amid John Terry Controversy

Timothy RappFeb 8, 2012

A good manager will always have his or her players' backs, sometimes to a fault.

Such is the case for the skipper of the English national team, Fabio Capello.

The manager justly resigned today after publicly disagreeing on Italian television station Rai with the English Football Association's decision to strip John Terry of his national team captaincy due to an upcoming trial for racially abusing a black player, Anton Ferdinand .

The decision was made without Capello's consent, and that's where the trouble began.

Capello's gaffe was that he did not inform the FA he would be making any comments regarding the manner—let alone publicly disagreeing with the board's decision—breaking FA protocol and creating enough tension to warrant Capello's resignation.

"

Asked by the TV interviewer whether he was in agreement with the decision to strip Terry of the captaincy, Capello replied: 'No, absolutely not. I spoke with the chairman (David Bernstein) and I told him that I don't think someone can be punished until it becomes official.

'The court will decide. It's going to be civil justice, not sports justice, to decide if John Terry committed that crime that he is accused of. And I thought it fair that John Terry keeps the captain's armband.'

"

Whatever side you feel is right in this matter, there is no questioning that the two sides are better off parting ways after this ordeal created. There's that old saying about how a house divided cannot stand, and this house is certainly divided over how to handle the Terry situation.

The last thing England's national soccer team needs is an avalanche of tension to pile on top of the pressure and expectations they already endure.

And clearly, Capello was angry enough with the board to openly defy their decision. That sort of divisiveness at the top isn't good for anyone.

Bygones are now bygones, and that's the best for everyone in this situation.
