Can FSU's Mario Edwards & Eddie Goldman Become Nation's Best One-Two Punch?
The Florida State Seminoles' defensive line will strike fear into the hearts of opponents for the next few seasons after today's recruiting commitments.
The Seminoles were able to nab 5-star defensive tackle Eddie Goldman and 5-star defensive end Mario Edwards on National Signing Day.
Goldman chose the 'Noles over Alabama, Auburn and Miami. Edwards has been a long-time Seminole lean, but kept LSU in the mix until recently.
There is no way around it. Goldman and Edwards will form a devastating combination on the Seminole defensive line.
Grabbing one player of their caliber would be one thing, but grabbing both gives Florida State a supreme advantage over opposing offensive lines.
Edwards is a mammoth defensive end. Standing 6'4'' and nearly 300 pounds, he has the ability to rush the passer or bottle up the run.
His considerable size and non-stop motor make him a threat to disrupt every play in the backfield. He is fundamentally sound and uses his strength to control the point of attack.
Edwards will be an All-American candidate in Tallahassee and has limitless potential at the next level.
Goldman will make things easier on Edwards by controlling the interior line.
He does not possess the animal-like motor of Edwards, however, he has exceptional speed and quickness for a player his size.
Goldman's size alone commands double teams. He understands how to stuff the run, but his burst and excellent hands allow him to put ample pressure on the opposing backfield.
His potential is through the roof. He has a chance to be the best at his position in college and a chance to do the same in the NFL.
The Seminole defense was already in excellent shape heading into this season. Brandon Jenkins and Bjoern Werner both return at defensive end, but Edwards is too talented to keep off of the field for too long.
Tim Jernigan will command one defensive tackle spot, but expect Goldman to bump Anthony McLoud and Everett Dawkins back a spot in the rotation. Like Edwards, he is too talented to be denied.
The two blue-chip recruits may not be the nation's best duo this season, but it will not take long. Add a year of experience to their superb skill sets, and these two will be making a ton of noise in 2013.
Start to listen for the rumblings very early on next season.
