Arkansas Football: Why Dorial Green-Beckham, Tyler Wilson Could Win the SEC
Some teams are good but not great, and then there are those teams that are just one or two pieces away from competing for a championship.
The Arkansas Razorbacks are one of those teams that could compete for a BCS National Championship if they had an extra piece to their puzzle. In this case, that final piece will be wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham.
Maybe you've heard the name once or twice over the last couple of months.
He's the top wide receiver prospect in this year's recruiting class and is arguably the top overall prospect of the year. He's a freak at 6'6", 220 pounds and runs the 40 in the 4.4 range. Wide receivers with his body and athleticism don't grow on trees, and corners who are able to cover them are few and far between.
He's currently torn between Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas and Missouri.
All are great schools and all of them are very attractive options for many different reasons. But if he ends up a Razorback, they will likely become the favorites to win the SEC.
Let's be honest—although teams in the east division are looking better on paper than they did last season, the winner of the west will likely win this conference again.
Arkansas only lost two games last season and they both came at the hands of LSU and Alabama. Both of those teams got worse, and with Green-Beckham, the Razorbacks will get better.
Alabama lost running back Trent Richardson, cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick and a pair of linebackers in Courtney Upshaw and Dont'a Hightower. If you think they can just replace players like that, particularly on defense right away, you're out of your mind.
LSU lost defensive tackle Michael Brockers, shutdown cornerback Morris Claiborne and wide receiver Rueben Randle. Not to mention they lost both of their starting quarterbacks and will have to depend on a quarterback who has little experience.
It's also worth mentioning that both games against the Tigers and the Crimson Tide will be home games next season for the Razorbacks.
Now that we know both LSU and Alabama's defenses will suffer from key players leaving next year, let's see which offensive players will return for the Razorbacks.
We start off with one of the top quarterbacks in the SEC, Tyler Wilson. He completed 63 percent of his passes last year and threw 24 touchdowns with only six interceptions. If you add Green-Beckham to a receiving corps that includes two other big receivers in Cobi Hamilton and Chris Gragg, you have the makings of a great offense.
Did I mention that the Razorbacks are also getting a healthy Knile Davis back? Yes, the same running back who rushed for over 1,300 yards in 2010 and had 14 total touchdowns. He will add a different dimension to this team that they didn't have last year.
Alabama ranked 81st in rushing yards last season and were ranked 13th in passing yards. Add a running game, and this offense will be even tougher to stop.
As far as defense is concerned, sure, Arkansas struggled to stop the run last year, but they still only allowed 22 points per game which was good for a solid 33rd in the country. And when you're able to drop 40 points per game, it doesn't really matter how much your defense struggles at times. You're going to win the majority of your games.
No matter which team Green-Beckham decides to join on national signing day, he will make a huge difference and an immediate impact. For the Razorbacks, he will make them competitors in the SEC and possibly BCS National Championship contenders.
