Arizona Wildcats Recruiting: Cats Snag Commitment from Ken Griffey Jr's Son Trey
The Arizona Wildcats' football team has secured the son of a legend.
...Albeit a legend of a sport other than football.
According to the Tucson Citizen, the Wildcats landed Trey Griffey on Monday. He's a wide receiver out of Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando, Florida, and the son of future baseball Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr.
Per a report from the Orlando Sentinel, Griffey's plan was to announce his destination on National Signing Day, but he was too excited to reveal that he had chosen to go to Arizona.
“My parents said, ‘It’s up to you, you got to do what you want to do ... what you feel is right,'" said the young Griffey. “I’m going to the University of Arizona. It doesn’t get any better than that.”
Griffey is marked down as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and ESPN.com, the latter of which has him rated as the 96th best wide receiver in the country.
It may seem like a modest rating, but Griffey opened a lot of eyes during his senior season at Dr. Phillips. He set school records with 72 catches for 970 yards, which is pretty impressive once you consider he had just 22 receptions for 362 yards as a junior at West Orange.
When you watch video of Griffey, you don't see an explosive athlete with can't-miss skills. What you do see is a wide receiver who runs solid routes and who is totally aware of what's going on in a given play at all times. His ability to adjust and to go get the ball stands out, and so does his ability to make catches in traffic.
That's more than you can say about a lot of wide receiver recruits, so it's a good bet that this is not the last we're going to hear of Griffey.
One thing we know for sure is that Rich Rodriguez is glad to have Griffey's commitment. Rivals.com has Arizona's 2012 recruiting class marked down as the 10th-best class in the Pac-12, well behind South division rivals USC and UCLA. Rodriguez needs as much talent as he can get.
It's also worth noting that the Pac-12 is suddenly home to quite a few sons of legends. Jerry Rice Jr. plays wide receiver for UCLA, Barry Sanders Jr. just committed to Stanford, and now Trey Griffey has committed to Arizona.
The start of a trend, perhaps? Probably not, but it's certainly interesting.
