Alabama Football Recruiting: Where Will Cyrus Jones Line Up Next Season?

Danny FlynnJun 4, 2018

Alabama fans have had plenty to celebrate recently, as their team is once again the kings of college football after beating LSU in thoroughly dominant fashion in the 2012 BCS Championship Game.

The Tide absolutely rolled over the Tigers, which has given fans a reason to rejoice, but there could be even more cause for celebration in the coming weeks. Coach Nick Saban and his staff are now busy trying to assemble another big-time recruiting class, one that could turn out to be the best in the country when all is said and done.

Saban currently has a whopping 27 commitments for the 2012 class, including pledges from some of the top-rated recruits in the country, such as S Landon Collins, RB T.J. Yeldon, LB Reggie Ragland and S Eddie Williams.

One of the most intriguing members of Alabama’s 2012 class, though, is Cyrus Jones, a 4-star prospect who played for the Gilman School in Baltimore, Maryland. Jones is one of the most athletic and naturally gifted players in the entire country, and he’s got the type of speed and physical skills to develop into an impact player early on in his career in Tuscaloosa.

The only question that has to be answered is, where exactly is he going to line up?

Jones is a versatile athlete who has a diverse skill-set that could fit in at a number of different positions, including running back, wide receiver and even cornerback. That means the Alabama coaching staff is going to have an important decision to make when Jones gets to campus.

Looking over the early Alabama depth chart for next season, the Tide will lose key important players at all three positions, with star running back Trent Richardson, the team’s two most productive wide receivers, Marquis Maze and Darius Hanks, and the team’s top two corners—Dre Kirkpatrick and DeQuan Menzie —all departing.

Luckily for the Tide, because of the way Saban has recruited over the past few years, there are plenty of talented reinforcements waiting to get their turn at all three positions.

Eddie Lacy is ready to take over the running back duties, with Jalston Fowler, Dee Hart and incoming freshman T.J. Yeldon all providing solid depth. Duron Carter, the son of legendary receiver Chris Carter, will be eligible and ready to make his presence felt at wide receiver, where he’ll be joined by DeAndrew White, Kenny Bell and Kevin Norwood. And at cornerback, Dee Milliner looks like he’s in store for a breakout campaign in 2012.

So, where will Jones end up?

If I had to guess at this point, it looks like wide receiver would be the most natural and overall best fit for him. He would add some valuable depth to an otherwise largely unproven receiving corps.

Jones possesses the type of speed needed to stretch the field, and he could quickly develop into one of QB A.J. McCarron's favorite targets as just a freshman.
