10 Biggest NBA Double-Double Machines

Matt JonesJun 7, 2018

One mark of success in the NBA is when a player records at least 10 of any two separate statistical categories in the same game.

Known as achieving a double-double, there are certain players in the league who achieve this in a few games per season, some a few times over a career and some who seem to surpass that mark every time they hit the court.

It is most common that this feat comes in the form of points and rebounds, but guards get into the action by scoring and passing out assists.

The following list will discuss the top 10 double-double machines in the NBA.

Due to the 2011-2012 season just getting underway, performances in this category last season was also considered to find the top players.

No. 10: Deron Williams, New Jersey Nets

Despite switching teams at the trade deadline last season, and being stuck on a struggling squad this year, Deron Williams is a one of the top point guards in terms of getting double-doubles.

Amid speculation that he will not choose to stay with the New Jersey Nets after this season, Williams is tied with Derrick Rose for second place this season among point guards behind Steve Nash.

Williams is scoring 18.4 points and adding 8.4 assists per game this season.

Smith has started out strong and is averaging above his career average with 17.1 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

Al Jefferson quietly racked up double-doubles last season as he carried a struggling Utah Jazz team down the stretch of a difficult year.

This season is a different story as the Jazz are the surprise of the Western Conference with one of the better records in the league.

Jefferson is once again off to a good start statistically but he has a lot more help from his teammates.

His season averages to this point are 18.3 points and 9.2 rebounds per game.

LeBron James is expected to be everything in Miami, and in terms of double-doubles he is performing at that level.

James is the leader in this category among all players at the small forward position.

Most players, depending on position, will get their double-doubles with either rebounds or assists. James is not far from meeting the mark with either on any given night.

This showed as James recorded four triple-doubles last season in addition to his double-double marks.

James now averages 29.9 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.6 assist per game. All are above his career averages.

Among all of the great point guards in the NBA, the Phoenix Suns' ageless wonder Steve Nash is the leader of the pack in terms of double-doubles.

Last year he posted double figures in points and assists in 41 games and this season he is on track to lead point guards once again.

He is currently leading the Suns by averaging a double-double with 15.1 points and 10.1 assists per game.

Over the last several years, Pau Gasol has proven to be a great compliment to Kobe Bryant. Gasol has been able to notch a double-double in about half of the games he has played in both this year and last.

To add to his totals, Gasol also had one triple double last season. This year, Gasol is averaging 16.5 points and  9.4 rebounds per contest.

Last season's rookie of the year Blake Griffin burst onto the scene and went on to record the third highest double-double total in the league. He also added two triple-doubles to that tally last season.

This year, Griffin has picked up right where he left off and has only missed a double-double in three of his games so far.

He is currently averaging 21.3 points and 11.8 rebounds per contest.

No. 2: Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic

Dwight Howard is the most sought after free-agent-to-be this season for a good reason.

Every time that Howard steps onto the court there is a great chance that he will finish the game with a double-double.

Howard actually led all players in the number of double-doubles recorded last season, but he played in five more games than Kevin Love who was in second place.

This season Howard is averaging 20.1 points and 15.6 rebounds per game.

There is no doubt that Kevin Love is the top double-double machine in the NBA.

After setting a modern era record with 53 consecutive double-doubles last season, Love has followed it up by starting this season with a double-double in each of the 14 games in which he has played.

Love is averaging 25.2 points and 14.5 rebounds per game so far this season.
