NBA Power Rankings: Ranking Every Team's Top Point Guard

Matt JonesJun 6, 2018

The shortened NBA season is off to a great start, and many of the usual suspects are already putting up good numbers and playing well.

Throughout the league, many players at the point guard position regularly contribute to helping their teams to be successful.

While all teams do not have an elite player at this position—only one team can have last year's MVP and only the Los Angeles Clippers won the Chris Paul sweepstakes—the level of point guard play is generally high.

The following is a list of how the top point guard from each team stacks up against his counterparts.

Remember that these rankings are based on performances at this point of the season and may not reflect a full career.

30. Derek Fisher, Los Angeles Lakers

1 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 24.7
PPG: 4.3
APG: 4.8

Derek Fisher is not expected to do much at the point guard position at this time in his career, but a little more production would be nice.

If he could bump his numbers a little bit, it would be a good support for Kobe Bryant

Perhaps he will do a little better as he will have to play more time while Steve Blake is out with an injury.

His late three pointer did help the Lakers to a 73-70 victory over the Dallas Mavericks Monday night.

29. Jason Kidd, Dallas Mavericks

2 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 28.2
PPG: 4.9
APG: 4.7

Jason Kidd finally won an NBA title last season, but his numbers have dropped and he is struggling this year.

It was expected that the quicker pace of this shortened season would take its toll on the older players, but for Kidd it is a little too much.

Unless things get better for Kidd, this could very well be the last season of his long career.

28. Jameer Nelson, Orlando Magic

3 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 29.9
PPG: 7.9
APG: 5.4

Jameer Nelson has seen his point and assist numbers decline from last season, and he is struggling to lead the Orlando Magic this year.

After a rough start, Nelson has put together a few nice games recently, but he must play better as he is the key player behind Dwight Howard if the Magic are going to reach their potential this season.

DENVER NUGGETS VS GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS, NBA

27. Stephen Curry, Golden State Warriors

4 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 31
PPG: 15.2
APG: 5.6

Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry has only played in five games this season due to a foot injury.

Before the setback, he was playing well and helped the Warriors to a big win against the Chicago Bulls.

Curry has got to get back onto the court to help the struggling Warriors.

When he returns, his ranking will be higher.

26. Devin Harris, Utah Jazz

5 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 25.8
PPG: 8.2
APG: 4.8

The strength of the Utah Jazz shifted to the front court last season when they traded away Deron Williams for Derrick Favors.

For the most part, Devin Harris has done a decent job of managing Utah's offense, but it does not show in his statistics.

Harris, the former NBA All-Star, splits time with veteran Earl Watson who is a reliable backup for times when Harris is not on the court.

25. Brandon Knight, Detroit Pistons

6 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 30.5
PPG: 11.9
APG: 3

Brandon Knight is getting playing time on a bad team early in his career.

Expected to be a strong rebuilding piece in the future, Knight is learning the game and how to play at this level.

Knight continues to get better as he has had more time in the starting line-up lately, and he seems to be making the most of his opportunities.

Progress may be slow for Knight, but the Pistons are not going anywhere fast either.

24. Iman Shumpert, New York Knicks

7 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 30.8
PPG: 11.8
APG: 3.4

Iman Shumpert started the season out as a point guard but has begun to play at the shooting guard position.

Regardless of which guard spot he is in, Shumpert has spent time as the backup point guard and has put up better numbers than starter Toney Douglas.

Shumpert must get used to the shooting guard position if he is to stay on the court when veteran Baron Davis is healthy enough to play.

23. Mario Chalmers, Miami Heat

8 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 29
PPG: 11.9
APG: 4.2

With three NBA All-Stars on the Miami Heat, not a lot is asked of those who play the point guard position.

Mario Chalmers has done a decent job of managing this offense but does not have to do much for the team to be successful.

Rookie Norris Cole has put together some nice games, but Chalmers is still the top point guard in Miami.

22. Darren Collison, Indiana Pacers

9 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 33
PPG: 11.1
APG: 5.3

Darren Collison has started each game for the Indiana Pacers and is performing near his career averages.

The Pacers have done well overall this season and have seen an upgrade at several positions.

Reserve guard George Hill is doing a nice job off the bench, and the two are helping the Pacers to be one of the surprise teams in the Eastern Conference this season.

21. Raymond Felton, Portland Trail Blazers

10 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 34.2
PPG: 11.1
APG: 6.8

Raymond Felton started the season off playing well for the Portland Trail Blazers but has struggled lately.

In a recent game against the New Orleans Hornets, Felton scored only two points to go along with his eight turnovers, but he did have12 assists in that game.

His field-goal shooting percentage is well below his career average, and his numbers are down from last season.

20. Mike Conley, Memphis Grizzlies

11 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 32.1
PPG: 11.1
APG: 6.7

Mike Conley and the Memphis Grizzlies are all finding ways to do more following the loss of Zach Randolph.

After missing some time with an ankle injury, Conley has returned to play very well in two straight games, with one of those a win against the Chicago Bulls.

If Conley can stay on the court and play the way he has the last couple of games, his averages will rise significantly.

19. Jrue Holiday, Philadelphia 76ers

12 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 34.9
PPG: 14.2
APG: 4.3

Jrue Holiday is the floor leader of the most surprising team in the NBA this season.

The Philadelphia 76ers are enjoying a great start and are the leaders in the Atlantic Division.

The athletic Holiday is finding a way to help his team keep winning and played his best game of the season against the Milwaukee Bucks by scoring 24 points and adding five assists and five steals.

18. John Wall, Washington Wizards

13 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 36.7
PPG: 13.3
APG: 7.1

The Washington Wizards have looked horrible so far this season and have only a single win against the Toronto Raptors on the year.

Point guard John Wall has put up decent numbers but is not getting any help as the Wizards look like they are running around the court completely lost.

The team has some talented players, but they need to learn some discipline by not throwing up shots too soon and decreasing turnovers.

After only a few games, it is already a long season for Wall and the Wizards.

17. Jeff Teague, Atlanta Hawks

14 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 34.9
PPG: 12.3
APG: 5.8

Jeff Teague has had some ups and downs this season but did put 20 points and a season-high 10 assists on the board against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Hawks began the season in need of a point guard who could manage the game for the other offensive players that they have.

Teague has done a nice job so far this season, and his team has a record of 10-4.

16. D.J. Augustin, Charlotte Bobcats

15 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 33.8
PPG: 14.8
APG: 7.3

Kemba Walker may have started the last couple of games at the point guard position for the Charlotte Bobcats, but D.J. Augustin is putting up better numbers overall and has played well from the bench.

Walker was drafted to be a future leader of the franchise, but Augustin is not quite ready to give that up.

It will be good to see the two battle for playing time in Charlotte.

15. Ricky Rubio, Minnesota Timberwolves

16 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 30.8
PPG: 11
APG: 8.3

Ricky Rubio has only started the last few games for the Minnesota Timberwolves but has been playing starter's minutes throughout the year.

The electrifying Rubio has brought excitement to the Timberwolves and is already hearing talk of becoming the NBA Rookie of the Year.

As he settles into a more consistent starting role with the team, both his scoring and assist numbers should go up.

14. Tyreke Evans, Sacramento Kings

17 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 34.6
PPG: 17.5
APG: 3.6

The Sacramento Kings are a mess right now, but Tyreke Evans is playing pretty well despite all of the distractions.

Evans is second on the team in scoring but leads the team in assists at only 3.6 per game.

That is a problem for a group of players who willingly throw up the ball and have never seen a shot they didn't like.

13. Kyrie Irving, Cleveland Cavaliers

18 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 27.1
PPG: 17
APG: 5.1

NBA rookie and first-overall draft selection Kyrie Irving is only 12 games into his career but has already been impressive at this level.

He has been a very bright spot for the Cleveland Cavaliers, who appear to have found a point guard for the future.

With each game, Irving is quickly becoming the leader of this team, which now has a .500 record.

12. Jose Calderon, Toronto Raptors

19 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 35.3
PPG: 11.6
APG: 8.9

Jose Calderon has quietly been one of the better point guards in the league for several seasons in Toronto.

This year with the Raptors is not different as he is once again playing well.

Calderon has had some tough games this season but picked up a double-double against the Atlanta Hawks.

Calderon is also shooting 95 percent from the free-throw line.

11. Brandon Jennings, Milwaukee Bucks

20 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 36.7
PPG: 18.7
APG: 5.3

Brandon Jennings leads the Milwaukee Bucks in scoring this season despite having some ups and downs.

The Bucks seem to have picked up where they left off last season with difficulty scoring points and winning games.

Jennings should benefit from the return of low-post presence Andrew Bogut but is going to have to get more scoring help for the team to win more consistently.

10. Jarrett Jack, New Orleans Hornets

21 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 37.7
PPG: 15
APG: 7.6

Jarrett Jack has the difficult task of being the team's first point guard after Chris Paul.

So far, Jack is doing a good job despite playing on an injured foot.

He is averaging the highest point and assist totals of his career even though he is playing on a team that is having difficulty winning games.

As he continues to play this well, Jack should be an important part of the Hornets' rebuilding process for several seasons.

9. Steve Nash, Phoenix Suns

22 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 30.4
PPG: 13.2
APG: 10.1

The old man still has it and is not yet ready to call it quits.

Steve Nash has tried to play through an injury over the last week but is still averaging a double-double on the season.

Nash is really the only bright spot on a struggling Suns team that needs to figure out a way to score some points.

Outside of Marcin Gortat, the rest of the team has offered little help to the ageless veteran.

8. Tony Parker, San Antonio Spurs

23 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 32
PPG: 16
APG: 7.5

Even after losing Manu Ginobili to a serious hand injury, the San Antonio Spurs have found ways to win, and Tony Parker is a big part of that.

It doesn't appear that things have changed much for Parker as he is near his career averages this season and has his team in the top spot in its division.

Parker continues to show the consistency that has made him a top point guard throughout his career.

7. Ty Lawson, Denver Nuggets

24 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 33.6
PPG: 16.8
APG: 6.4

Lightening-quick point guard Ty Lawson is a huge part of the reason that the Denver Nuggets are doing as well as they are this season.

Lawson is averaging nearly five more points per game over last season, and his play that keeps him on the court has started to cause unhappy feelings among fellow point guard Andre Miller.

So far this season, Lawson has emerged as the point guard of the future in the Mile High City.

6. Deron Williams, New Jersey Nets

25 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 35.9
PPG: 18.3
APG: 8.4

Deron Williams and the rest of the New Jersey Nets are already enduring a nightmare season that started off poorly with the loss of Brook Lopez to injury.

Williams has seen his overall statistics drop, but he does not have any help in New Jersey.

Despite the decrease, he is still playing well and is one of the better point guards in the NBA.

He just needs to find a way out of New Jersey as fast as he can go.

5. Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder

26 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 32.4
PPG: 18.9
APG: 5.5

Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder are meeting preseason expectations and seem to be cruising through their regular-season schedule.

Westbrook is playing well, and the team has one of the league's top records at 12-2.

About the only thing that has been difficult for Westbrook and the Thunder was an early-season argument with teammate Kevin Durant.

4. Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics

27 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 36.8
PPG: 14.7
APG: 10.1

The Boston Celtics are having a very difficult season this year, but it is not the fault of Rajon Rondo.

Even though the aging team is off to a 4-8 start, Rondo has carried the team and joins Steve Nash as the only other point guard averaging a double-double.

Rondo, once again, is proving that he belongs in the top five of the NBA among players at his position.

3. Kyle Lowry, Houston Rockets

28 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 37.1
PPG: 17.8
APG: 9.3

Kyle Lowry is flying under the radar to quietly put up one of the best seasons among point guards so far this year.

The remarkable thing is that he is contending for the top power ranking spot without the benefit of the talent level on his team that other players have.

Although the Houston Rockets do not have a great record, things are going to get better for them. The team started out with a very difficult schedule that will get easier over the next few weeks.

Lowry leads the team in scoring and assists and is second in total rebounds at 6.9 per game.

2. Chris Paul, Los Angeles Clippers

29 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 37.3
PPG: 18
APG: 8.4

The Chris Paul experiment in Los Angeles has worked out well so far for the Clippers.

Paul, who has not missed a beat since joining the team after the trade controversy, has fit in very well with Blake Griffin and the other good players on the squad.

Not only has Paul played well, he has led the Clippers in big wins against some of the top teams in the league.

Hopefully he can quickly overcome the injury that held him out of the team's recent game against the New Jersey Nets.

1. Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls

30 of 30

Season Statistics

MPG: 37
PPG: 20.8
APG: 8.7

It is hard to argue against the reigning NBA MVP who is off to another great start this season.

Rose is not only one of the top point guards but also one of the best players overall.

Missing a couple of games to a toe injury does not help him out much, but when he returns he will pick up right where he left off.
