Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan: Which Vets Are Done and Who's Still Got It?

Matt ShetlerJan 13, 2012

No matter how talented a player you may be, the one thing you can't do is beat Father Time.

One day, your body just isn't the same. One day, you lose a step. One day, you just get old.

It happens to the best of the best, and it's happening this season as well.

Here's a look at a collection of NBA veterans who have still got it—and some who don't.

Kobe Bryant

1 of 20

Yeah I think he's still pretty good, and if anyone had any doubts, I hope you watched what Kobe Bryant did the past two nights.

He's leading the NBA in scoring, and if the season ended today, he would have another MVP trophy on his mantle.

With all the miles he's logged in 16 long years, Bryant should at least be showing signs of slowing down, but he appears to be far from doing that.

Verdict: Still Got It

Tim Duncan

2 of 20

Tim Duncan's production has fallen off dramatically to the point where he's now only a 12-point and six-rebound type of guy per night.

One of the best big men in NBA history, Duncan can still be helpful to the Spurs but is no longer a superstar in the league.

Verdict: He's All Done

Dirk Nowitzki

3 of 20

He's a veteran of 14 NBA seasons, and he's still as talented as ever.

Dirk Nowitzki is still a tough cover and can get a few more seasons out of just shooting his jumper.

His 18.9 points he's averaging per game is three points below his career average, but he should be around that number by season's end.

Verdict: Still Got It

Kevin Garnett

4 of 20

Kevin Garnett is getting to the point in his career when his superstar status is slipping away.

His numbers are down across the board, and his minutes need to be monitored so his body doesn't break down by season's end.

He can still offer up decent production for another year or two, but don't expect anything like Garnett in his prime.

Verdict: He's All Done

Ray Allen

5 of 20

Allen is in his 16th NBA season, and his jumper is still as pretty as ever.

So far this season, he's been just as productive as his career numbers suggest he should be.

Being a shooter and not someone who has to take a daily pounding like Kevin Garnett, Allen could remain very productive for another couple of years.

Verdict: Still Got It

Paul Pierce

6 of 20

Paul Pierce recently just returned to the lineup after a foot injury, so we really haven't seen enough of the 14-year pro in 2012, but he's had a couple of good games and a couple of bad games so far.

Overall though, while Pierce begins to wind down his career, the good should outweigh the bad for the next couple of seasons.

Verdict: Still Got It

Vince Carter

7 of 20

Vince Carter was once a superstar, but he never really came close to winning a title.

He signed with Dallas hoping to do so, but he really doesn't have much left to contribute.

Just another team that Carter has helped destroy.

Verdict: He's All Done

Carlos Boozer

8 of 20

Carlos Boozer's game is becoming extremely inconsistent and is nearly becoming a liability on the defensive end for the Bulls.

His offensive game, though, is still pretty solid, as he can still finish around the rim and has a nice mid-range jumper.

It's his offense that will ultimately extend his career.

Verdict: Still Got It

Richard Hamilton

9 of 20

Richard Hamilton's signing in Chicago does wonders for the rest of his career. Playing with Derrick Rose and no competition at the 2-guard spot should allow Hamilton to play effectively through his current contract.

As long as his body holds up, which is yet to be determined, he should be a solid double-digit scorer for the next couple of seasons.

Verdict: Still Got It

Jason Kidd

10 of 20

Jason Kidd has always seemed like he can play forever, but he's 38 years old and finally appears to be slowing down.

He's currently hurt and out of the lineup, but when he was in there, he saw a severe drop in production.

Kidd has started the season averaging only 4.9 points and 4.5 assists per game, down nearly nine points and five assists from his career numbers.

This could be the last hurrah for the future Hall of Famer.

Verdict: He's All Done

Lamar Odom

11 of 20

This is the 13th season in the NBA for Lamar Odom, and in the previous 12, he's never had a season in which he averaged less than 10.8 points per season, much less the 6.6 points he's chipping in for the Mavericks this season.

He had a career year at age 31 last season, so you would expect his numbers to come down a bit, but not this much.

As for his career, we will make a judgement next season. Dallas just doesn't seem to be a good fit for Odom, but he still may have some gas left in the tank.

Verdict: Still Got It

Jason Terry

12 of 20

Dallas has a lot of veterans that they are going to have to make decisions about, and that includes Jason Terry, who has become one of the NBA's best sixth men.

Coming off the bench should extend one's career, but Terry comes off the bench and plays starter-type minutes.

He's still producing though, scoring in double-figures in all but two of the Mavericks' games this season.

Verdict: Still Got It

Ben Wallace

13 of 20

Once the NBA's most dominant defender, Ben Wallace has become a shell of himself.

Playing in his 16th NBA season at age 37, Wallace is now just a guy that can give Pistons coach Lawrence Frank a couple of minutes off the bench.

Verdict: He's All Done

Chauncey Billups

14 of 20

Chauncey Billups has put together a nice NBA career for himself and has a ring and a Finals MVP to show for it.

He's looking for another with the Clippers, but it could be a one-and-done situation for Billups in Los Angeles.

While he's still averaging above 15 points per game, which is right at his career average, he's shooting the ball very poorly.

Billups is a career 42-percent shooter from the floor and is only knocking down 34 percent of his attempts this season. He takes enough shots per game though, that his scoring won't be effected too much.

He will still be productive this season, but it's doubtful beyond that.

Verdict: He's All Done

Pau Gasol

15 of 20

Easy call here on Pau Gasol, who is in his 11th NBA season and having another good one, averaging 16.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game, both near his career averages.

He looks like he can still keep going for a while.

Verdict: Still Got It

Stephen Jackson

16 of 20

Stephen Jackson's career in Milwaukee hasn't gotten off to a great start. In the Bucks' first eight games, he failed to score over 18 points in any of them and was held to single-digits in three of them.

But in his last two efforts, Jackson has erupted for 34- and 25-point nights, both in Milwaukee wins.

In his 12th NBA season, it looks like Jackson may be slowing down and was even experiencing back problems in training camp.

But he's a scorer and should continue to do that pretty well for the next few seasons.

Verdict: Still Got It

Hedo Turkoglu

17 of 20

Hedo Turkoglu is a tough player to figure out. It looks like as long as he's in a Magic uniform, he can still play, but Orlando would love to unload his contract.

If the Magic do, who knows if he will be motivated enough to produce somewhere else.

He's having a decent 2012 season though, averaging 14.4 points per game, his highest scoring output in the past four seasons.

Turkoglu's not a good defender or rebounder, but he can still run the pick-and-roll. He's a good shooter and excellent passer, and that alone should keep him productive.

Verdict: Still Got It

Grant Hill

18 of 20

The classy Grant Hill is in his 17th NBA season, and for the first time, the 39-year-old looks old. The shortened 66-game schedule this season isn't going to do him any favors either.

Hill's numbers are way down, and it's likely that he doesn't get to an 18th season.

Verdict: He's All Done

Steve Nash

19 of 20

He's going to be 38 soon and is playing in his 16th NBA season, but Steve Nash is still averaging a double-double this season.

He can still shred defense in the pick-and-roll for a couple more seasons.

Verdict: Still Got It

Manu Ginobili

20 of 20

He's hurt again and out of the Spurs lineup, but before his hand injury, Manu Ginobili was averaging 17.4 points per game, up from his career 15.3 average.

The 34-year-old, 10-year NBA veteran is still a great finisher who sees the floor exceptionally well.

There's no reason to think his game will dramatically fall off anytime soon.

Verdict: Still Got It
