2012 NFL Draft: An Update of the Top 10 Selections
Business is about to pick up in the NFL, if it hasn't done so already. New coaches in Kansas City and Jacksonville and the potential for more (Jeff Fisher in St. Louis, maybe Marty Schottenheimer in Tampa Bay).
And if you don't think this may have an effect on the upcoming NFL draft, then may we enlighten you?
Coaching, ownership, management: they all go into making the right choice. And with changes taking place in Jacksonville and Tampa Bay, not to mention Miami and possibly Indianapolis, who knows what will happen.
The draft is still more than three months away and plenty of change will take place. But, as always, there is never a shortage of "guesses" as to where the top college talent will go.
Here is a look at the top 10 after the goings on in the NFL this past week.
10. Buffalo Bills: Riley Reiff, OT, Iowa
1 of 10The Bills need to strengthen their offensive line. Ryan Kalil and Jonathan Martin are off the board and the big tackle from Iowa is there for the picking.
With two good runners in Fred Jackson and CJ Spiller, the line needs to open holes better for the running game. It also needs to protect the team's quarterback, Ryan Fitzpatrick.
If the Bills opt for defense, they could look to Courtney Upshaw of Alabama.
9. Miami Dolphins: Morris Claiborne, Defensive Back, LSU
2 of 10This is where you see more defensive players coming off the board.
Claiborne is an All-American talent for the Tigers and gives the Dolphins another young stud on defense.
If Jeff Fisher goes to the Dolphins, he inherits a great coverage defender and someone to help in the return game.
8. Carolina Panthers: Alshon Jeffery, Receiver, South Carolina
3 of 10A team that did not get scared about his falling draft stock.
Jeffery is still a big, thick stud who will be a good player on the next level. He showed what he can do against the best competition in college football.
As a tall target, it gives Cam Newton another target over the middle and in the red zone.
7. Jacksonville Jaguars: Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
4 of 10This pick is actually the one where the tide of the draft may turn.
Jacksonville needs a receiver, but this high, I cannot see them taking anyone on the board. They could acquire receivers in free agency (Harry Douglas, Earl Bennett, Vincent Jackson) or trade down and gamble that Floyd or someone like Mohamed Sanu will be there.
Or they could take a defensive back.
6. Washington Redskins: Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
5 of 10This team needs Robert Griffin III and may trade up as high as to the second pick to select him. But if they are "stuck" at the sixth slot, why not take a tackle that will play for the next decade?
Martin may turn out to be better than Ryan Kalil in five years. He helped keep Andrew Luck upright for the Cardinal and will help protect the next quarterback in the nation's capitol.
It's not a "sex" pick, but a needed pick.
5. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
6 of 10The Buccaneers will have a new coach next season (Marty Schottenheimer?) and a new look on offense. Why not get the best play makers available in the draft still on the board?
Trent Richardson was the best running back in the nation this past season. He may be a better prospect than former teammate and Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram.
The team already has a young quarterback in Josh Freeman to build around. Why not a dependable every-down back to go along with him?
4. Minnesota Vikings: Ryan Kalil, OT, Southern Cal
7 of 10The Vikings trade down, pick up some draft picks and still get the man they want.
Minnesota appears to be on the right track with its team but needs more solid pieces. Kalil does that for them.
The team released Bryant McKinnie last season and Kalil looks to be the replacement the team needs.
3. Cleveland Browns: Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor
8 of 10Cleveland trades up one spot and gets the man they want all along. I think Minnesota will have more teams calling them than any other team in this draft.
Yes, Ryan Kalil is the best tackle in the draft, but Robert Griffin III will be the most prized player on the board after Justin Blackmon.
Griffin gives Cleveland options and most of all, star power.
The Browns defense was better this year, and now it is time for the offense to get healthy.
2. St. Louis Rams: Justin Blackmon, WR, Oklahoma State
9 of 10St. Louis looks poised to add a deep threat to the passing game.
This should make Sam Bradford very happy.
Blackmon is head and shoulders above all the receivers in this draft class. Hopefully that translates into stardom in the NFL.
Blackmon on the outside will also help open up the running game.
1. Indianapolis Colts: Ander Luck, QB, Stanford
10 of 10He will still be the top choice.
Now whether he starts next season at the beginning of the year remains to be seen.
There is speculation Peyton Manning may not be ready at the start of the 2012 season, so taking Luck is paramount to the success of this team.
Whether Jim Caldwell is still coach when the 2012 season begins is also a question that must be answered.
