Warriors Rumors: Nikola Vučević Eyed as More Realistic Trade Target Than Jimmy Butler
Chicago Bulls center Nikola Vučević is reportedly on the Golden State Warriors' radar as a potential trade target ahead of the Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline.
According to Anthony Slater, Marcus Thompson II and Sam Amick of The Athletic, Vučević has become a "more discussed" trade option for the Warriors than Miami Heat veteran Jimmy Butler within the Warriors organization and the NBA as a whole.
Vučević, 34, is enjoying one of the best statistical seasons of his career, and he is signed through the 2025-26 campaign, meaning he is neither a rental nor a long-term investment.
While Vučević was named an All-Star in 2019 with the Orlando Magic and during the 2020-21 season, which he split between the Magic and Bulls, this season has undoubtedly been his best full campaign since arriving in Chicago.
Through 33 games, the 6'10" big man from Montenegro is averaging 20.3 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2.1 three-pointers made per game, while shooting a career-best 55.9 percent from the field and 44.0 percent from beyond the arc.
Despite Vučević's excellence, the Bulls are only 10th in the Eastern Conference with a 15-19 record, which suggests they may be willing to sell ahead of the deadline.
Vučević has long been a quality shooter from deep, but he has been more efficient than ever before this season, perhaps making him the perfect fit for Warriors head coach Steve Kerr's offensive attack.
Per The Athletic, the Golden State coaching staff and front office have wanted a stretch center dating back to the offseason, and Vučević fits the bill.
At 17-16, the Warriors are in the thick of the playoff race, placing ninth in the Western Conference entering play Saturday.
However, with veterans such as Stephen Curry and Draymond Green leading the way, there is a sense of urgency to contend for another title, and it feels like Golden State needs an impact addition in order to make it happen.
The Warriors lost longtime star and one of the greatest three-point shooters in NBA history during the offseason when Klay Thompson signed with the Dallas Mavericks in free agency, and they haven't fully replaced what he brought to the table.
Vučević plays a different position, but he can knock down open shots and spread the floor for Curry, which may be exactly what the Warriors need.
Butler is perhaps the biggest name known to be available via trade, as the Heat announced Friday that they are willing to listen to offers for the impending free agent.
While he would bring plenty of big-game experience to Golden State with two career NBA Finals appearances, he has made fewer than one three-pointer per game in five of his past six seasons.
Vučević seems to be a better complement to Curry, and he may be the piece that could take the Warriors from fringe playoff team to title contender.
