Why BCS Bowl Loses Are the Best You're Ever Going to Get from Frank Beamer
Some coaches are just better than others.
Very few are as great as Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer, who has a 209-97 overall coaching record. All of his 68 percent winning percentage has come as the head coach for the Hokies. He's won eight bowl games since 1993, but only one has been a BCS bowl.
And that's where the problem lies: He has a 1-5 record in BCS bowls. He's able to get talented programs to the big games, but he's not able to win them.
In the 2000 Sugar Bowl, the Hokies were thumped by the Florida State Seminoles by a score of 46-29. Even though Virginia Tech out-gained Florida State by 144 yards, the Seminoles scored double-digit points in three of four quarters.
In 2005, the Hokies once again made the Sugar Bowl but lost to the Auburn Tigers by three points. Mainly because it took until the fourth quarter for their offense to wake up, as they were down 16-0. Again, Virginia Tech out-gained their opponent by 76 yards and had over seven more minutes in time of possession.
2008, Virginia Tech lost to the Kansas Jayhawks in the Orange Bowl by a score of 24-21. Kansas simply outplayed the Hokies in this game, but Virginia Tech was a two-point favorite heading into it.
And then you have last night, where the Hokies should have once again won the game. They bottled Denard Robinson up, limiting him to 13 rushing yards on 13 carries. He only completed 42 percent of his passes and threw for just 117 yards.
The Hokies offense out-gained the Wolverines by 193 yards, but they ended up losing the game in overtime.
This seems to be a trend with Beamer, where his team outplays the opponent, is more talented than the other team and still always finds a way to lose.
Beamer is a great regular season coach and he recruits extremely well, but he can't win big games. Some coaches can, some coaches can't.
It seems like this is the best Virginia Tech is ever going to get out of their head coach.
