Why LSU & Alabama Will Prove They're Still Superior to Oklahoma State & Oregon

Randy ChambersJan 3, 2012

Now that the Oregon Ducks and Oklahoma State Cowboys have won their BCS bowl games, the debate is louder than ever. After seeing both of those teams play extremely well in their bowl games, many are wondering if either one should have been in the national championship.

Of course, LSU and Alabama will play in that game, but only a few are happy about it. Many wanted to see an offensive team against the defensive team in LSU. But did either of those teams really deserve a shot at the SEC elite?

Here's why both Alabama and LSU will prove they are still the better teams in college football.

Play Defense

1 of 3

You may enjoy offense much more than defense, and you may think defense is boring, but it wins games. Offense is exciting, but when your defense couldn't cover a sleeping baby, we have a problem. I'm all for great offense and lots of points, but it gets a bit ridiculous when you allow over 500 yards or nearly 600 yards like Oklahoma State and Oregon did.

Nearly any team in the country can score points; it takes a complete team to be able to play great on both sides of the ball. Teams like Oregon and Oklahoma State are fantastic on only one side of the ball and rely solely on that to bail them out every game.

You may think the other teams are more exciting, but they're not better.

No Offense in the SEC?

2 of 3

It seems like many believe that the SEC doesn't have offense, and if you're one of those people, you're wrong. You don't have to look any further than LSU and Alabama to know that both of these teams are capable of scoring points.

LSU averages nearly 39 points per game, which is the 12th-most in the country. Alabama averages 36 points per contest, which is the 16th-most in the country. They're putting up these numbers in the SEC, which is primarily a defensive conference.

Do you need any more statistics?

Georgia is a team that only allows 277 total yards on offense and less than three touchdowns. LSU dropped 42 points on them. Penn State is another team that doesn't give up much, as they allow less than 17 points per game. Alabama scored 27 points in their victory over the Nittany Lions and had over 350 total yards.

Don't let the LSU-Alabama game fool you, these teams are capable of putting up points.

In the Toughest Conference

3 of 3

You can say what you want about the SEC, but they win football games and dominate the national championship, winning soon-to-be six in a row. It's extremely hard to call this conference overrated until somebody knocks them off.

The simple fact is that LSU and Alabama will only lose to each other this season no matter what happens in this game. They didn't lose to an unranked team like Oklahoma State did or lose two games like the Ducks did. Both Alabama and LSU mopped up the competition, winning every game by double-digits—except the game against each other, of course.

Alabama and LSU are the top two teams in the country, and until somebody is able to put together an impressive resume and knock them off, it'll remain that way.
