3 Reasons the BCS Championship Game Won't Outshine the Other BCS Bowl Games

Randy ChambersJun 7, 2018

Although many may not agree with the BCS system, you can't deny that the bowl season is one of the most exciting times of the year.

Sure, there may be more bowl games than there should be, but the majority of the games are exciting and provide us with matchups we wouldn't normally get the chance to see.

This season there was a beef with the national championship matchup. A lot of us didn't want to see two teams play that are from the same conference and that we've already seen play this year.

However, there is one thing that we can all agree on: The BCS bowl games so far have been fantastic. The BCS National Championship may be a good game but the other bowl games are what we will remember this season.

Here's why the national championship won't outshine the other four BCS bowl games.

We've Seen These Teams Play Already

1 of 3

I know this has been said before, and it's one of the main arguments made for why we should have a playoff. But it's true, and that's the reason many aren't as excited to watch this football game.

All of the other bowl games are matchups that we haven't seen in a long time.

Clemson and West Virginia have only played each other once, and that was in 1989. The last three of the four total matchups between Oregon and Wisconsin were decided by four points or less. Oklahoma State and Stanford had never played each other until they met in the Fiesta Bowl.

Watching teams that normally wouldn't play each other is one of the things that makes bowl season so great.

This matchup lacks that excitement.

What Happens If Alabama Wins?

There is a solid argument for why these two teams should have a rematch in the national championship. Whether you like it or not, these are probably the two top teams in college football.

But, what if Alabama wins this time?

Of course, if the Crimson Tide win this game, they'll be crowned the champions of college football. But what makes their win more important than the Tigers' win back in November?

The season series will be tied 1-1, and I'd like to see another game played between these two teams to settle this. An Alabama win would just make it seem like the regular season doesn't mean anything and would be punishing LSU in a way.

Putting a possible asterisk beside the winner's name is something we haven't had to do in the other BCS bowl games.

No Offense

3 of 3

Defense is part of football, and it does win championships, but it does not bring in ratings and doesn't excite people as much as offense does.

Sure, a big hit will make fans ooh and aah, but the majority want to see high-scoring games with a ton of fireworks.

All of the other BCS bowl matchups have provided us with a ton of offense and off-the-chart stats. Offense is what excites everyone. Very few want to see a game end in a 9-6 score and a 60-minute game of field position.

It's not exciting at all and won't gain the same attention as the other bowl games did.

The national championship will likely provide a bit more points than the first game did, but it won't be much. These are the top two defensive teams in the country, and points will be hard to come by.

The BCS National Championship Game may determine who the college football champion is under the BCS format, but it won't outshine the other BCS bowl games.
