Losing Tyson Chandler Will Lead to Dallas Mavericks Failed NBA Title Defense

Matt ShetlerDec 29, 2011

A year ago, the Dallas Mavericks capitalized on playing as a team and brought home an NBA championship.

This season, the Mavericks have come out of the gates very slowly and while the team concept is indeed the same, the results are going to be much tougher to come by.

There is one major reason for that.

Tyson Chandler is wearing a New York Knicks uniform and he is the single main reason why the Mavericks will not repeat as NBA champions.

While Chandler may not be making much of an impact in New York at the moment, he was the perfect fit for the Mavericks.

The impact he made in Dallas on the defensive end on the glass couldn't be measured. It was the one thing that separated the Mavericks from the more talented Miami Heat, and it's the one thing that this Dallas team is missing.

So far, and it's only been two games so things can change, the Mavericks have allowed 110 points per game. That's easily the worst mark in the league.

Not only are they getting torched on the defensive end of the floor, Dallas is getting completely crushed on the glass, pulling down only 34 rebounds per game.

The offense will get better with time, so there really isn't too much to worry about on that end, but you just can't flick the switch and become a good defensive team over night.

That's what Chandler brought to this Mavericks team and that's exactly what this team is missing.

Barring a trade for Dwight Howard, it looks like Chandler is irreplaceable in Dallas.

Some guys are just better for certain teams and Chandler was good for Dallas. This could ultimately prove to be the one reason why the Mavericks won't win another championship this season.
