Wayne Hennessey, Dimitar Berbatov and More EPL Winners and Losers
It's Gameweek 18 and we're right in the thick of the jam-packed winter schedule.
This is where the real test begins for the clubs challenging for a top-four spot, and it showed this gameweek as four of the "big six" sides dropped points against weaker teams. Even Manchester City couldn't manage a win over West Brom, failing to score for the first time this season in a 0-0 draw.
After these fixtures the title race is wide open, so let's get right to the winners and losers of Gameweek 18.
Winner: Fulham
1 of 9Fulham have had a remarkable record this season against "big six" sides. They've drawn both Arsenal and Manchester City, they beat Liverpool at the Cottage and now drew against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
If they can keep grabbing unlikely points and win against the teams that they should be winning against, Fulham can certainly achieve a strong midtable finish, with the Europa League not too far off either.
Winner: West Brom
2 of 9You've got to hand it to West Brom for being the first team this season to prevent Manchester City from scoring.
Roy Hodgson's side grabbed a very unlikely point against the league leaders, holding off City's star-studded attack for the full 90 minutes.
With the Citizens dropping points for just the third time this season, this result blows the title race wide open.
Winner: Dimitar Berbatov and Manchester United
3 of 9Manchester United won 5-0 for the second time in a row this week, thumping Wigan at Old Trafford.
Dimitar Berbatov scored a hat trick, but don't expect that to cool down the rumours surrounding his departure in January. That's how Berbatov rolls—he scores goals in groups. I mean, his 21 goals in the league last season consisted of five goals in one match, a hat trick here and then a hat trick there.
So no matter how many goals Berbatov scores, he'll still be out of favour with Sir Alex Ferguson.
Nonetheless, it was a brilliant win for United. It's quite astonishing that while their title competitors are struggling with the winter schedule, the injury-ravaged Red Devils are breezing right through it.
Winner: Blackburn
4 of 9Blackburn are yet another lower-table side to grab an unlikely point this weekend.
The Rovers held Liverpool to a 1-1 draw at Anfield, having their first-half goal cancelled out by Maxi Rodriguez's second-half header.
With Blackburn's last match being a horrible 2-1 loss to Bolton, this result against Liverpool was completely unexpected and a rare positive for the Ewood Park outfit.
Nonetheless, I still have no clue how Steve Kean hasn't been sacked.
Winner: Wayne Hennessey
5 of 9Wayne Hennessey played the game of his life as he held Arsenal to a 1-1 draw at the Emirates.
The Welsh international has always been a fairly reliable keeper for Wolves, but this performance highlighted his strengths as he made a number of incredible saves to deny Arsenal's free-flowing attack.
With more performances like this one, Mick McCarthy's side could very well survive the drop.
Loser: Manchester City
6 of 9Manchester City drew a blank for the first time this season as their multimillion-pound attack failed to break down West Brom's resilient defense at the Hawthorns.
All of a sudden Roberto Mancini's side are no longer clear-cut title favourites, with their lead at the top only due to a better goal difference than Manchester United. Like I mentioned before, the title race is wide open now, and although City have been more convincing than their Manchester neighbors, the title is theirs to lose.
Loser: Liverpool and Anfield
7 of 9Liverpool have probably been the Premier League's most disappointing team so far this season.
After several big-name transfers during the summer, Kenny Dalglish's side looked like getting back in the Champions League and maybe even challenging for the title. But with half the season played, it doesn't look like that'll happen for Liverpool.
The Reds simply can't win at home and have been held by so many weaker sides at Anfield, this week stooping to a low by drawing rock-bottom Blackburn.
At this rate, Liverpool should be happy with a Europa League spot.
Loser: Wigan
8 of 9After grabbing unlikely points against Liverpool and Chelsea, I honestly thought Wigan were capable of getting something out of their match against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Well, I was dead wrong.
Wigan lost 5-0. Enough said.
Loser: Chelsea
9 of 9Chelsea's slump isn't completely over just yet.
The Blues played their third draw in a row on Monday, being held 1-1 by Fulham at Stamford Bridge. This means they've only gained three points out of a possible nine in the past three matches, not the ideal situation for a title contender.
Andre Villas-Boas must find the winning formula for Chelsea if he wants to keep his job; it's as simple as that.
