Spain are heading to the World Cup final, topping the favorites France by a 2-0 scoreline on Tuesday afternoon in Dallas.

In one of the most impressive performances by any team all summer long, Spain controlled the match from start to finish against the back-to-back World Cup finalists. A mistake from left back Lucas Digne, whose foul on Lamine Yamal allowed Mikel Oyarzabal to open the scoring from the penalty spot, put France behind the eight-ball partway through the first half. Despite trailing, France couldn't mount any real danger against the Spanish defense, with Luis de la Fuente's buildup unit and midfield trio working their way out of pressure to keep the ball.

Spain, to their credit, weren't content with a one-goal lead. Though they were more selective about their moments to push forward in the second half, a strike from Pedro Porro off of some lovely combination play at the edge of the box made it 2-0.

While France can't argue they were the better team on the day, they can certainly argue that they played below their standard. Perhaps the penalty concession and an injury to William Saliba in the first half threw them off. Perhaps they were simply ill-prepared to work their way back into a game when trailing for the first time at the entire World Cup. Regardless, their run ended one game sooner than French fans would have hoped.

For their part, Spain are flying high ahead of Sunday's final, where they'll face one of England or Argentina.

It's been a dramatic first half between Spain, the reigning European champions, and France, the back-to-back World Cup finalists.

Really, the biggest moments have come in Spain's favor, who took the lead on a Mikel Oyarzabal penalty kick earned by Lamine Yamal thanks to an errant kick from Lucas Digne. Not long after conceding the opener, center back and defensive bedrock William Saliba went down with an injury, forcing Didier Deschamps to insert the less experienced Maxence Lacroix into the action.

In the midst of falling behind for the first time at the entire World Cup, France neglected to create any real danger going forward. Outside of a bit of direct play from Kylian Mbappe, Unai Simon hasn't had much to worry about. Can Spain continue their impressive work in transition defense? Or will France's attacking talent find their groove in the second half? We're about to find out.
