Switzerland v Colombia: Round of 16 - FIFA World Cup 2026

It wasn't pretty – and it certainly wasn't dominant – but Switzerland have booked a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals after sneaking past Colombia in a penalty shootout.

On the field in Vancouver, there wasn't much between the two teams. Both Colombia and Switzerland were hesitant to throw more numbers forward than absolutely necessary, instead contenting themselves with trading jabs as opposed to true knockout blows. A lack of precision in each final third made life easy for the two defensive units. Colombia's second half substitutions made a bit of an impact for Néstor Lorenzo's team, with attacking midfielder Juan Quintero showing some spark. But the deadlock remained.

Without rising star Johan Manzambi, the Swiss attack was muted. The 20-year-old flexible attacker missed out on the match due to an injury, forcing Switzerland to take the field without their best and most impactful attacker. The youngster's absence was clear, with Murat Yakin's team managing just seven shots in 120 minutes.

For all of the struggles, Switzerland's tournament campaign stayed alive after a shootout. With Gregor Kobel making a crucial save and four of the five takers converting, the Swiss came out ahead of their South American foes.

Now with a date set against Argentina in the next round on June 11th, things are only going to get more difficult for Switzerland from this point forward.

Switzerland v Colombia: Round of 16 - FIFA World Cup 2026

It's been a tightly contested Round of 16 affair between Switzerland and Colombia in Vancouver, with both sides stuck in a scoreless deadlock.

Simply put, there's been precious little separating the two teams. Both have had spells of possession. Both have spent time defending in their own half. Both have been searching for weaknesses in the other, but have been doing so without overextending and leaving themselves vulnerable defensively. The result? A game where neither team has created any real clear-cut chances.

In the second half, Colombia will be hoping for a moment of magic from star left winger Luis Diaz or another one of their dangerous attackers. Switzerland, for their part, are undoubtedly missing rising star Johan Manzambi. The 20-year-old Freiburg attacker missed out on this game due to an injury, leaving Murat Yakin's team without their most incisive goal threat. Will anyone break the deadlock in the second half?

GOAT overwhelmed by instant World Cup classic comeback

FT - Argentina 3, Egypt 2

In one of the nerviest games of the World Cup so far, Argentina bested Egypt to book their spot in the quarterfinals.

Despite trailing 2-0 in the second half, Argentina wrestled back into the lead thanks to a heroic late comeback that featured goals from Lionel Messi, Cristian Romero, and Enzo Fernandez.

After Yasser Ibrahim's header put the Egyptians ahead, Argentina quickly had the chance to equalize from the penalty spot. However, Messi's failed attempt, one saved by goalkeeper Mostafa Ahmed Shobeir, helped Egypt hold their lead. Messi, for all of his brilliance, has missed both of his penalties this summer and is just 50% from the spot in his entire World Cup career.

Egypt nearly doubled the lead before the hour mark after a clinical counter attack. However, the goal was disallowed after video review due to an Egyptian foul on an adventurous Lisandro Martinez at the other end. Egypt wouldn't be denied, though, scoring less than 10 minutes later. After Mohamed Salah sprinted forward with the ball on the break, Haissem Hassan found Ziko for the finish. Argentina, though, wrestled a goal back from Romero, found their equalizer from Messi, and capped off their wild comeback with a strike from Fernandez. They turned the game on its head in the blink of an eye, reminding the world of their status as reigning champions.

Thanks to their Round of 16 victory,Argentinawill now take on the winner of Switzerland's matchup with Colombia on July 11th.

After a narrow escape from Cape Verde in the Round of 32, Argentina find themselves under pressure yet again. They trail Egypt by a goal at halftime.

Yasser Ibrahim's header in the 15th minute put the Egyptians ahead, with the center back latching onto a perfect cross from the right side in the aftermath of a corner kick. It was hardly the start Argentina wanted. Things got even worse when Lionel Messi had his potential equalizing penalty kick saved in the 21st minute by Mostafa Ahmed Shobeir. Perhaps the one gap in Messi's armor, the No. 10 has now missed both of his efforts from the spot at this World Cup.

Egypt, for their part, have done well to take the lead. Their task will be to absorb Argentina's attacking forays in the second half without breaking down in front of goal. Can they send the reigning champions packing?
