Another definitive victory puts USA in complete control of Group D. Despite conceding possession during stretches of the second half, they remained solidified defensively to prevent Australia from coming back. Several key players stepped up to ensure USA would stay composed against an opponent who wanted to rattle them physically and mentally.
They nearly started the second half with authority after Balogun got behind the Australian defense with an instinctive run after a terrific ball from Tyler Adams. Parma's Alessandro Circati tracked back to do just enough in preventing the dynamic striker from adding to his tournament goal total. Balogun's pace caused problems all match long for the Socceroos.
Australia wasted their first excellent opportunity in the match in the 62nd minute. Two substitutes combined with Cristian Vopato being found at the edge of the box by the rapid Nestory Irankunda who found space down the right flank off a well-orchestrated attack in transition. The good sequence was wasted with a poor shot curled by Vopato that went well over the bar.
USA started to look uneasy playing out of the back, leading to one careless high turnover. Australia was unable to capitalize on that moment with a tame shot from versatile midfielder Connor Metcalfe being easily saved. Manager Tony Popovic used four of his substitutions in the first 16 minutes of the second half. That included bringing on both goal scorers from their 2-0 win over Turkiye. It did lead to improvement in winning back possession and looking more promising going forward.
Soaking up pressure while defending a lead is something USA will have to be comfortable doing if they make a deep run. They did exactly that, led by an all-action performance by Adams. The workhorse midfielder made several key defensive contributions between headed clearances, ball recoveries, and interceptions. Combining his impressive effort with Chris Richards and Tim Ream being well-positioned to make necessary clearances, USA's defensive nucleus was pivotal in earning a clean sheet.
Despite being more controlled than aggressive in the second half, the USA showed maturity against an Australian side that doesn't hesitate to get physical. They didn't lose control after a few skirmishes. Matt Freese was never in danger of conceding. These are positives coming out of a subdued second half. Most importantly, they advance to the knockout stage as Christian Pulisic can take more time to recover from a calf injury.

Could have iced the game

There is no stopping USAโฆ at least for now. They have been in command with crisp passing, explosive runs, and resolute defending. Weston McKennie and Sergino Dest combined early to get USA into a steady rhythm. Dest continues to be brimming with confidence after a terrific performance against Paraguay. The emphasis on attacking both wings equally paid off early and emphatically.
Folarin Balogun continues to be a nightmare for defenders to contain. His ability to shield the ball against center backs and turn with blistering pace gives USA a dimension not many teams can get from their number nine. His burst down the left wing led to him sending a low cross into the middle, which led to pure chaos for Australia's back line. Center back Cameron Burgess couldn't handle the pressure, as his attempted clearance ended up in his own net.
The USA's constant pressure forced Australia into errors as they struggled to build up any sort of possession. It's becoming more evident that Mauricio Pochettino's identity is being firmly established within the team. The pressing, quick transitions, and creating attacks with both fullbacks flying down the flanks are all things you can appreciate when watching this invigorated USA team.
Australia looked dangerous a few times, but they have been caught a step behind on too many occasions trying to keep pace, resulting in multiple yellow cards. Not being able to win many ground duels has put them in difficult positions. Playing under constant duress, they were bound to concede again, albeit in another unfortunate way.
On a set piece, Dest blasted a shot at the center of the box that took a wicked deflection. Alex Freeman was first to pounce on the ball to capitalize on a golden opportunity. It was a well-deserved goal for the right back, who won several of those ground duels and made key tackles. The USA is in prime position to take full control of Group D. It will be interesting to see how they sustain their high-intensity levels after an incredibly impressive first half.
