Stephen Curry Injury: Why a Serious Injury Spells Doom for Golden State Warriors

Matt ShetlerDec 21, 2011

You can't blame new Golden State Warriors head coach Mark Jackson for wanting the Warriors job. Having one of the best young back courts in the game in Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis is a great selling point.

Now, Jackson could be holding his breath and wondering what he got himself into after the recent ankle injury to Curry in the Warriors' 95-91 loss to the Sacramento Kings.

Trying to defend Jimmer Fredette's crossover, Curry turned his surgically-repaired right ankle in an ugly fashion during the final minute of the first half. Curry left on crutches, and Warriors' team doctors diagnosed it as a sprained ankle, but Curry was set to undergo further tests today.

If the injury turns out to be serious, it could mean doom for the Warriors season.

Curry isn't only the future of the Golden State franchise, he's also the biggest piece of the present team. Without him in the lineup, the Warriors are in major trouble.

For a team that's not great on the defensive end to begin with, replacing Curry will be tough. He's one of the best all-around players in the game today, but what makes him special is his shooting. He's coming off a season in which he averaged 18.6 points and 5.8 assists per game and is learning to become a complete NBA point guard. However, the Warriors just can't replace his shooting—not only from behind the arc, but also at the free-throw line where Curry is among the leagues best.

Without him in the meantime, rookie Klay Thompson could see a big increase in minutes, but he can't replace Curry.

It's a case of any team being hurt badly by the loss of their best player. Curry is that for the Warriors, and without him, their season could very well be doomed.
