Rich Rodriguez, Charlie Weis and the Most Overrated Coaches in College Football
Charlie Weis and Rich Rodriguez are two of the most overrated coaches in college football. But they aren't the only ones.
The truth is that there are probably more overrated coaches than underrated or adequately rated ones. There are some in every conference, and they all get paid too much.
Here are five of the most overrated coaches in college football.
Rich Rodriguez
1 of 5Rich Rodriguez heads the list.
After getting West Virginia to the brink of a national title and securing a new long term contract, Rodriguez left for the "greener" pastures of Michigan.
At Michigan, he offended players, bucked Michigan tradition, and most importantly, lost games. Never has a coach been so highly regarded for such a small window of success. Rodriguez had just a single winning season at Michigan.
He knows offense, but Arizona could have done better.
Charlie Weis
2 of 5It's more understandable why Charlie Weis is as highly regarded as he is. The man is a very accomplished NFL offensive coordinator and has the rings to prove it.
However, he's not a good college head coach. Period.
He did win 19 games in his first two seasons at Notre Dame...with someone else's players.
Kansas made a desperation hire that won't pay off.
Mike Leach
3 of 5Mike Leach won 84 games during a decade at Texas Tech and made a bowl game every year. So how's he overrated?
The guy ran a pass happy offense that most people weren't prepared to defend in a state where even the worst recruits are really good. He is a good coach, but he isn't a top 10 coach like many believe.
Plus, he has terrible people skills, which isn't good for a coach at the Division I level who is expected to politic and schmooze boosters.
Mack Brown
4 of 5Mack Brown has won 140 games in 12 seasons. Pretty impressive until you consider where he's coaching.
Texas is by far the best job in college football. They have more money than they know what to do with and are in the middle of the largest and most well-stocked recruiting hotbed in the entire country.
Texas should be in the national title hunt every season.
It's fallen in the last few years, due to the lack of the coaching staff's ability to recruit and develop talent. Specifically the develop part.
Brown is a good coach, but it's hard not to be at Texas.
Todd Graham
5 of 5It's hard to believe this guy is overrated. He hasn't done much.
He did have at least 10 wins in three of his four seasons at Tulsa, but he didn't do jack at Pitt. Graham went 6-6 with the Panthers in the worst BCS conference before bolting to Arizona State.
Arizona State, why did you want this guy? They could have had June Jones, a guy who has won at multiple places and made a name for himself. Instead, they hired a guy with a negative behind-the-scenes reputation highlighted by him texting his resignation to Pitt.
