LSU vs. Alabama Rematch: Trent Richardson Vital to 'Bama's Upset Hopes

Luis BatlleDec 20, 2011

College football fans across the nation are in utmost anticipation of an LSU and Alabama matchup, which will make for a special showdown in the BCS National Championship Game.

In the first matchup between the two earlier in the season, LSU was able to come out on top 9-6 in a slugfest that was decided in overtime. Four missed field goals from the Crimson Tide would end up costing them the game and a shot at the No. 1 rank.

Aside from the missed opportunities and inability to finish drives for the Crimson Tide, there was a much bigger problem for the team. Starting running back and 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist Trent Richardson was shut down by a tough LSU defense.

Despite out-playing LSU for the majority of the first game between the two, the LSU defense was able to take away the biggest weapon on the offensive side of the football. That weapon was Richardson.

In the loss, Richardson ran for just 89 yards. It was just one of three games all season where arguably the best running back in college football was held to under 100 yards. Richardson was held to 3.9 yards per carry, as it was apparent the Tigers did their homework.

The Crimson Tide win games by having an overwhelming advantage in time of possession and, in turn, running the football with consistency. Alabama is ranked No. 15 in the nation when it comes to running the football, averaging 219.8 yards per game.

Richardson has been the major reason why, as he has run for 1,583 yards and 20 touchdowns on the season. What makes these numbers all the more intimidating is the fact that they only continue to improve. In the past three games, Richardson has averaged 168.3 yards per game to go along with three rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns.

Considering that Richardson has been on a roll as of late, there is much promise that he will be able to top 100 yards in his next meeting with LSU in the BCS National Championship Game.

With the Crimson Tide losing by just three in a game in which the team had missed multiple field goals, a big game from Richardson will ultimately be the difference in Alabama winning a national title in 2012.
