NBA Rumors: Why the Los Angeles Lakers Must Deal Andrew Bynum

Kyle VassaloDec 20, 2011

The Los Angeles Lakers are falling apart fast and rather than try to win a championship now with a group of players who are clearly incapable of winning it all, they need to deal injury-prone Andrew Bynum and salvage their reeling franchise.

The Lakers were humiliated by the Dallas Mavericks in the postseason. Kobe Bryant and the "elite" frontcourt were mopped up and embarrassed.

Now, Phil Jackson is gone and Lamar Odom is on the Mavs. Kobe isn't getting any younger and the window to win a championship with this group is gone.

Stern axing the CP3 trade has left Pau Gasol in LA and the Lakers on the fast track to being bounced out of the playoffs early, being left with no hope for the future.

Bynum is a high-profile big man who would be an attractive piece if the Lakers decided to move him. They need a healthy, young franchise piece to build around.

Winning it all isn't in the cards for the Lakers this season. They've got to gear up for the future before it's too late.

That doesn't mean they have to flip Bynum for Dwight Howard. Height-starved teams like the Golden State Warriors who have attractive, young players who could be moved have to catch the Lakers' eye.

While it appeared for a time that the Lakers had the means to bring in both CP3 and Superman, neither are going to be putting on a Laker uniform.

That doesn't mean all is lost. The Lakers' proactive approach has rendered them nothing thus far, but they should do everything they can to deal Bynum while his stock is high. It's only a matter of time before he goes down again and holding out hope for Howard will render them with nothing.

The future of the Lakers is looking bleak. Life A.K. (After Kobe), is going to be brutal unless the Lakers act now and flip their overrated center.
