2011 Bowl Predictions: Games Certain to Light Up the Scoreboard

Richard LangfordDec 18, 2011

The following bowl games will bring the gift of points for viewers. Most football fans love scoring, which means they are going to love these games.

Adding to the awesomeness of these soon to be high-scoring contests is the fact that two of them are BCS bowl games.

High scores on the biggest stages—it doesn't get much better than that.

Alamo Bowl: Washington vs. Baylor on December 29th, at 9 p.m. EST

This game is features powerful offenses and horrible defenses. Washington is 99th in points allowed per game, and that is actually better than Baylor, who is 109th in points allowed.

Even if these teams didn't have prolific offenses, this game would be high scoring, but they do. Baylor is sixth in points per game, and Washington is 36th.

The Huskies have little hope of stopping the Bears. Washington's clear weakness on defense is their pass defense. Washington has allowed opposing QBs to throw for a rating of 136.1. They have also allowed 21 touchdown passes to just 11 interceptions.

And that is the defense the Huskies will throw out to stop Heisman Trophy winner Robert Griffin III.

On the other side of the ball, the Huskies will bring a balanced offense to attack the weak Baylor defense. The Huskies are 51st in passing yards and 67th in rushing yards.

Meanwhile, the Bears are allowing 5.18 yards per carry and an opposing passer rating of 136.05.

This will lead to the underrated combo of RB Chris Polk and QB Keith Price exploding for big days. This game is going to go over an 80-point total.

Rose Bowl: Oregon vs. Wisconsin on January 2nd, at 5 p.m. EST

Every game involving Oregon is a candidate to be a shootout, and this one is certainly no different. Oregon's fast-paced offense leads to lots of points and a ton of possessions.

On the surface, Wisconsin would appear to have a defense capable of slowing down the Ducks. They are sixth in points allowed this year.

However, this is largely due to their weak schedule. Wisconsin allowed 37 and 39 points in two games against Michigan State. And what is even more foreboding for this defense is that they allowed 33 points to an Ohio State team that runs a similar, but far less prolific, offense to Oregon.

Wisconsin will joyfully add to the point total in this game, as they can also put points on the board, and Oregon is prone to give up points. They have allowed 30 or more points in three of their last four games.

Wisconsin's offensive line will be able to manhandle Oregon's front, which will open up running lanes and give QB Russell Wilson plenty of time to throw. All of that means points galore for this matchup.

Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. Stanford on January 2nd, at 8:30 p.m. EST

This game is a great matchup for a plethora of reasons. The least of which is not that it is going to light up the scoreboard.

Oklahoma State is second in the nation in scoring. They are putting up 49.3 points per game. Stanford is fifth in the nation, racking up 43.6 points per game.

The Cowboys run up their points with an unrelenting passing attack. They are second in the nation in passing yards, putting up 386.3 yards per game.

That is bad news for a Stanford team that has allowed opposing QBs to throw for a passer rating of 129.5.

On the other side of the ball, Stanford has an extremely balanced attack. We all know that Andrew Luck can shred apart any defense, but he is not Stanford's only way to move the ball. They also have a potent rushing attack.

Oklahoma State is not particularly stout in any part of their defense, and they allow 4.31 yards per carry. This will leave Stanford free to pick the way they want to attack this defense, and both teams are going to score points with ease.
