Gus Johnson: Ranking 5 of Johnson's Best College Basketball Calls

Chris RolingDec 14, 2011

Gus Johnson is famous in the sporting world for his energetic deliveries and animated calls. Johnson has the unique ability to make the most boring play exciting. He is popular for his calls in the NFL, college basketball, college football and beyond.

Johnson is most recognized for his college basketball calls, especially in the NCAA March Madness tournament. He announced college basketball for CBS for 16 years, and each game in those 16 years was a memorable one thanks to Gus.

Selecting five of Gus' best moments was difficult, but after sifting through 16 years of material, here are Johnson's best college basketball calls:

Honorable Mentions

1 of 6

Illinois-Ohio State (2005)

In the clip above Ohio State upsets No. 1-ranked Illinois as the game comes to a close. In typical Gus Johnson fashion, he turns into a fan and screams louder than anyone else in the building. Not to suggest that this is a bad thing.

UCLA-Gonzaga (2006)

Gonzaga experiences a massive meltdown and loses in the final seconds. As time expires, Gus proceeds to emit noises that aren't exactly human while screaming various catch phrases such as "It's over!"

5. UConn-Gonzaga (2008)

2 of 6

Gonzaga and UConn found themselves in a titanic struggle that was destined to end in dramatic fashion.

In the waning seconds of the second half, UConn's A.J. Price nails a three-pointer to send the game into overtime. Thankfully for everyone involved, Gus was the one calling the game.

As Price's shot finds the bottom of the net, Gus breaks into a shriek that temporarily breaks the audio of the broadcast. It was the perfect ending for a game only destined to be called by Johnson.

4. Vermont-Syracuse (2005)

3 of 6

Lowly Vermont pulls off the upset over the Orange in the first round as T.J. Sorrentine drills a questionable 28-foot three-pointer. His coaches and opponents can't believe it, and neither can Gus.

Gus proceeds to scream at the top of his lungs while delivering the infamous "parking lot" line. All things considered, he managed to pull himself back together for the remainder of the game.

3. Gonzaga-Florida (1999)

4 of 6

Gus delivers what may be his most infamous line as the Bulldogs take down the Gators in the final seconds in this Sweet 16 showdown.

Florida had a chance after "The Runner" to bring the ball down the court and hit a three-pointer for the win. The shot hardly missed, but one can only imagine what this highlight would be like if it had went in as Gus already appeared to be having a heart attack as the ball floated through the air.

2. Ohio State-Xavier (2007)

5 of 6

A missed free throw by Xavier gave Ohio State a chance late. A chance, meaning another opportunity to hear Gus Johnson publicly lose his mind if something exciting happens.

After the missed free throw, Ron Lewis receives a pass from fellow Buckeye Mike Conley and drills a three-pointer to take the game into overtime.

What ensues next is Gus yelling for an extended amount of time followed by a hauntingly maniacal laugh that no one could possibly forget.

1. Washington-Arizona (2011)

6 of 6

This Pac-10 championship showdown between the Huskies and Wildcats ended on an Isaiah Thomas buzzer-beater, and boy did Gus let us know about it.

Arizona's star Derrick Williams looked to be leading his team to a championship victory until Thomas and Company ruined his plans.

At least Williams can look back on the event and smile thanks to Gus Johnson screaming to the point of almost passing out.
