Craig James: ESPN Analyst Tosses Name into Texas Senatorial Race

Zachary D. RymerDec 13, 2011

Bad news, college football fans. Craig James' days at ESPN may be numbered.

You're free to react accordingly, but just know that if James does indeed end up leaving ESPN, it will be on his own terms. It is now known that he aspires to be more than just a television analyst.

Via Gromer M. Jeffers of The Dallas Morning News, here's the latest on James:

Yup, Craig James wants to be a U.S. Senator. For the state of Texas, no less.

Makes sense. James is a native of Texas and he played his college ball at Southern Methodist University, which is located in Dallas. He knows the state of Texas like he knows where Boise State really belongs in the rankings.

No doubt you're picking up my sarcasm, but the truly funny part is that James is the kind of guy who looks and acts like a guy who would be a politician from the state of Texas.

Think about it. James is a handsome devil who talks a good game, and he carries himself like a guy who knows that he's a handsome devil who talks a good game.

Also, James has, for lack of a better word, strong opinions about the things he's talking about. Depending on what you think of the guy, the word "strong" can be translated to mean inspired or stupid.

Those who have been watching James for long enough tend to side with the latter translation, and for good reason.

Will James succeed in his quest to become a Texas senator?

Honestly, I have no idea. I know very little about Texas politics, and it doesn't help that I live in California, a state that views Texans as backwoods dingbats who should be universally shunned.

My hunch, though, is that James' quest to become a senator will go better than you may think. Like I said earlier, he fits the mold pretty well, and he's a man with plenty of influence. He also knows how to bury anyone who is making life inconvenient for him.

Mike Leach and Bruce Feldman will vouch.

So we'll see. This thing could end up getting serious in a hurry, in which case it will be more and more apparent that James has finally outgrown ESPN.

I'll let you determine how you want to feel about that.
