Dwight Howard Rumors: Chauncey Billups the Key for Magic to Retain D12
It appeared a foregone conclusion that Dwight Howard would be leaving the Orlando Magic by 2012. But recent developments could see Howard remain with the Magic.
After the Magic acquired former Boston Celtics Glen Davis and Von Wafer on Monday, Howard backtracked on his request to be traded. Now, ESPN is reporting that sources said the Magic doesn't want to trade Howard at this time.
In the aftermath, veteran point guard Chauncey Billups is reportedly high on Howard's wish list.
Billups, at 35 years of age, isn't as spry as he used to be, but then again, his game was never built on overwhelming opponents with athleticism. He averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 assists and 3.1 rebounds last season, fairly concurrent with his career average.
On top of that, Billups orchestrated the upset of the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2004 NBA Finals, primarily because of his leadership and competitiveness. When thinking playoff team, Billups' name is attractive to a lot of teams.
The Miami Heat have also been in the running for Billups' services, but he must clear waivers at 6 p.m. ET today if either team is to have a shot at acquiring him.
Stein reports that Howard would make an attempt to urge Billups to come to Orlando instead of Miami.
With Billups, the Magic would have veteran leadership with point guard Jameer Nelson, J.J. Redick, Jason Richardson and Howard anchoring the team.
The signing of Davis also can't go unnoticed. Despite some squabbles in Boston with head coach Doc Rivers, he's actually overachieved. Despite being undersized, he fit well with the Celtics because of his ability to defend well using his bulk and position, and he would be a nice addition at power forward.
All of a sudden, the Magic are looking better, and don't think Howard hasn't taken notice.
