Tim Tebow: Denver Broncos Quarterback Is an NFL MVP Contender

Jeff GrantDec 11, 2011

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow was certainly the talk of the National Football League around the Las Vegas strip this afternoon, leading his team to a 13-10 come-from-behind overtime victory over the Chicago Bears as 3.5-point home favorites on Sunday.

The second-year signal-caller out of Florida has led the franchise to six consecutive wins, and is officially in the running for the NFL's Most Valuable Player award.

It's almost a foregone conclusion that Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has already wrapped up the honor, leading his squad to a perfect 13-0 record heading into Week 15.

Let's take a closer look at the top five candidates.

Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh Steelers QB

1 of 5

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger deserves to be in the discussion, but won't walk away with the award due to losing both meetings with the Baltimore Ravens this year.

His quarterback rating is 95.6 through 13 games, which would only be his sixth-best mark if the season ended today.

It also helps to have a defense that ranks second in the league in yards allowed.

Current place: Fifth

Tim Tebow, Denver Broncos QB

2 of 5

Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow lands in the fourth spot due to seeing action in only 10 of 13 games.

He did manage to throw for a season-high 236 yards in Sunday's 13-10 win over the Chicago Bears, while also gaining 49 more yards on the ground.

Finishing second behind Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers would be a major accomplishment.

An even bigger one would be leading his team to an AFC West division championship and a spot in the playoffs.

Current place: Fourth

Tom Brady, New England Patriots QB

3 of 5

Last year's MVP winner lands a spot above Tim Tebow due to this team ranking last in the league in total defense.

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has thrown for 4,273 passing yards, sitting just 95 yards behind New Orleans Saints pilot Drew Brees.

Both are on pace to break Dan Marino's single-season passing yards record, but the slight nod goes to Brees in this particular category.

Current place: Third

Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints QB

4 of 5

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is on a mission, averaging 336 passing yards per game while throwing 32 touchdowns and just 11 interceptions.

His team currently leads the NFC South division by two games over the Atlanta Falcons—paced by an offense that ranks second in the league in scoring (31.9 points per game).

The Saints definitely want another shot at the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs, dropping a 42-34 season-opening contest to the league's only undefeated team at Lambeau Field on Sept. 8th.

Current place: Second

Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay Packers QB

5 of 5

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers leads the NFL with a 123.3 passer rating, which is very impressive considering where Tom Brady (106.0) and Drew Brees (105.9) stand in the category.

He could probably win the award without taking another regular-season snap, but will get a chance to add to his 39 touchdown passes next week against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Heavy favorite on everyone's list.

Current place: First
